Eduardo Scarpetta (né le 13 mars 1853 à Naples et mort en 1925) est un acteur et metteur en scène italien de la seconde moitié du XIX et du début du XX siècle.

Biography

Eduardo Scarpetta, dès l'âge de 15 ans, monte sur les planches pour camper tous types de personnages, notamment comiques, du théâtre napolitain. Il signe son chef-d'œuvre Misère et Noblesse, connaît la gloire et abandonne définitivement le spectacle en 1909.

Il a donné naissance à une dynastie de comédiens parmi lesquels Eduardo De Filippo, Peppino De Filippo et Titina De Filippo, lesquels marqueront le théâtre et le cinéma napolitain du XX siècle. Il est également le grand-père des acteurs italiens Augusto Carloni, Luigi De Filippo et Luca De Filippo.

Don Felice Sciosciammocca becomes mayor of the town of Roccasecca. The grandson Ciccillo is an idler that is in the distant Naples to spend unnecessary money that his uncle sends him to continue his studies in medicine and a friend supports him in pursuing this futile activity hilarious. However one day Don Felice choose to go with the whole family in town to see the new hospital that opened Ciccillo, as he had written falsely relative to the first day, and then to his grandson will be trouble. In fact Ciccillo wanted more money and come up with a good reason to justify the request he made up the story that he had opened a clinic for the mentally ill. Now to extricate himself from deception Ciccillo asks an acquaintance to give him a few hours to control a pension for old to make her visit to Don Felice. Man, being a simpleton, he sees a group of old men who are trying some scenes of a tragedy of William Shakespeare and then sees people coming and going to his bedroom at night. So Felice really believe to be in a clinic crazy, but sooner or later the chickens come home to roost and Don Felice discovers the truth.

The story is taken from the Eduardo Scarpetta's play: Naples, 1800. The poor Felice Sciosciamocca tries to work being a scribe for ignorant people, while his friend Don Pasquale tries to make photographs for rich couples. Meanwhile in the house where the two live, their wives start to fight because the apartment is mortgaged, and the women don't have money to pay the rent. Luckily rich Count Luigino, in love with the beautiful dancer Gemma, asks Pasquale and Felice to stage a farce for him. In fact the parents of Gemma want to meet Luigino's family, but he knows that his real father does not approve his love affair with the dancer. So Luigino transforms Don Felice Sciosciamocca into his uncle: Prince of Casadores, and Don Pasquale has to play the true father of Luigino. The young count entrusts a false part to play to all members of the two families, except the second wife of Felice: Concetta. Unfortunately Count Luigino cannot find a role for her, and Concetta gets very angry. While Felice Sciosciammocca and Pasquale're argue in the beautiful villa of Don Gaetano, Gemma's father, Concetta bursts in the home, and tries to compromise the plan organized by Luigino. Fortunately Don Felice manages to fix the situation and in the end, all is happily resolved.

The film is based on a play by the famous Neapolitan writer Eduardo Scarpetta, father of Eduardo and Peppino De Filippo. The story is set in Naples and Sorrento in the second half of 1800. The thief Felice Sciosciammocca (the surname in Naples means "one who is always with her mouth open in astonishment"; Felice means "Happy") together with the bandit Faina ("Weasel") escapes from prison and meets with a eunuch Turkish that he should go to Sorrento for a service. Don Felice kidnaps him and steals his letter of recommendation to get into the house of the rich man who had been sent the Turkish, so that gains a bit 'of money for him and for his accomplice. The man who had called the Turkish is the rich grocer Don Pasquale, being jealous of his wife and young daughter, betrothed to Don Carluccio holding a dowry, is to host the Don Felice robes Turkish and immediately test some suspicion. In fact, the Turkish rather than look like a eunuch protector proves to be a great womanizer and causes the sympathy of all the girls in the country and the wrath of the young. Don Felice, forgetting appears Faina, have fun in monitoring the wife and daughter of Pasquale and Don Carluccio appears more and more restless by the net waste of his betrothed. In the days to follow Don Felice will be met with the Honourable Cocchetelli who had recommended the real Turkish to Don Pasquale, but can not reveal the truth because Don Felice surprised him with a girl who was not his wife. Toto De Pasquale (Toto) is the holder of a modest tailoring. The day of the baptism of his son, receives the visit of the Advocate Espinaci (Eduardo Passarelli), charge d'notice the seizure of his property because of a debt long overdue and unpaid. When the lawyer discovers that the wife of De Pasquale (Clelia Matania) is an old friend of his, he decides to postpone. Toto, to ingratiate himself further, he decides to do godfather, forgetting that he had already entrusted the task to brother Matthew (Nino Milano), incurable bully. A few minutes later Toto, the lawyer and Matthew discover that the nurse (Bice Valori) has lost the baby after a fight on the streets with her husband. Without saying anything to his wife, Toto goes to look for the child and, in order not to suspect anything to the new mother, the child does bring the Romolini, a family of distracted students living close to De Pasquale. Oblivious to the fact that the child is brought home by a friend of De Pasquale mercy, Toto, the lawyer and Matthew end up at the home of a prostitute (Isa Barzizza) and his crazy protector (Guido Celano). Later, they are led to believe that the child has been brought in the wrong country estate of Romolini. Once in the village on the estate, the three divide and Toto pulls what he believes to be his son (but it is actually the child of Romolini) to grandfather Arturo (Arturo Bragaglia), who called for help immediately denounced the kidnapping of the baby. A few minutes later, the entire town chasing the poor tailor, mistaken for a kidnapper. Toto may first lynching and then fall from the roof of a building. At the end of many vicissitudes, Toto joins lawyer and brother with the baby, but arrived at the church where the baptism was to take place, he discovers that his son was already baptized. The poor man must therefore suffer the insults of the lawyer (who threatens to sequestrargli the workshop on behalf of its customers) and the mother-in-law (who denies financial support), as well as Romolini. At the end of the film, Toto sits on the steps of the church, while everyone is running behind a tow truck on which was accidentally placed his son and the small Romolini.
