After the closure of their shipyard in Northern Spain, a few former workers – Santa, José, Lino, Amador, Sergei and Reina – keep in touch. They meet mainly at a bar owned by their former colleague Rico. Santa is the most superficially confident and the unofficial leader of the group. A court case hangs over him relating to a shipyard lamp he smashed during protest against the closure. José is bitter that his wife, Ana, is employed when he is not. The gap between them is widening and he is fearful that she will leave him for a co-worker. Despite arthritic legs, Ana endures night shifts at a fish factory and thinks her looks are now lost. Not everyone seems to agree including her boss. Lino, an aging family man, doggedly pursues positions beyond his qualifications. The oldest member of the group, Amador, has degenerated into alcoholism after being abandoned by his wife; maintaining an increasingly transparent pretense that his wife will soon return from holiday. Reina has managed to find a job as a watchman at a football club, smuggling his friends into a game. Lino attends job interviews despite applicants being nearer his son's age. Sergei claims his career as an astronaut was forestalled by economic measures in the Soviet Space program.

Javi, Manu, and Rai are friends from school. They are teenagers, and they talk about girls a lot but seldom talk with them. They live together in the barrio (neighbourhood). It is a barrio of large social housing blocks. There is little to do, and in August even less. The centre of the city is far away, so the three friends spend most of their time in the barrio. The television news says that thousands of inhabitants of the city have gone to the coast for the summer. They wish they were among them. The windows of the travel agents are full of tempting offers. But their lives demonstrate how hard it is to leave the barrio and how hard it is to improve their situation. In the end, their lives take an unexpected turn.

From an ocean rig, a demented scientist, Krank (Daniel Emilfork), kidnaps children from the nearby, unnamed port city to steal their dreams, as he is incapable of having dreams of his own. Among them is the adopted little brother, Denree (Joseph Lucien), of carnival strongman and former whaler One (Ron Perlman), who sets out to rescue him with the help of a little girl named Miette (Judith Vittet), a member of a thieves' guild composed entirely of orphaned children. They delve into the world of a bio-mechanical kidnapping cult and discover the connection between the scientist and the missing Denree.
