Ernesto Gómez Cruz (born 7 November 1933) is a prolific Mexican actor with more than 154 films.

He has been nominated several times for the Ariel Award. These include his acting in El Infierno (2010), El crimen del Padre Amaro (2002), El imperio de la fortuna by Arturo Ripstein (1987), La víspera de Alejandro Pelayo (1983), Cadena perpetua by Ripstein (1979), La venida del Rey Olmos by Julián Pastor (1975), and Rosa by José Estrada (1969).

Set in Mexico during the 1850s, the film tells the story of Sara Sandoval (Salma Hayek) and María Álvarez (Penélope Cruz). María is an uneducated, poor farm-girl whose caring father is being forced off his land by a cruel U.S. land baron, named Tyler Jackson (Dwight Yoakam). Sara is the highly educated, wealthy daughter of the arrogant owner of the nearby properties, and has recently returned from Europe where she attended numerous grade schools and colleges in England, Spain, and France for several years. In one fell swoop, both María's and Sara's fathers fall under attack by the baron, (Sara's father is killed, María's is shot but survives) giving him free rein in the nearby territories. As an act of revenge, María and Sara team up to become bank robbers, stealing and giving back to the poor Mexicans who had lost their lands.

The story follows Jerry Welbach (Brad Pitt) as he travels through Mexico to find a valuable antique gun, The Mexican, and smuggle it into the United States. At first the new mayor attempts to do good but a lack of funds cripples his efforts, and the bribe of a brothel owner sets him on the path to corruption. In 1952, the presidential candidate of the PUM political party Carmelo Barriga visits the rural town of San Jilemón el Alto where he gives a speech promoting his candidacy and political party. During the speech and among the townspeople, a young woman gives birth to two twin girls. In a political move, Carmelo decides to adopt one of the girls whom he names Lorena and who becomes an active politician in her own political party, the PUF. Lorena then becomes a presidential candidate running against her rival, Santos Barboza of the PUM. When Lorena and her campaign visits San Toribio del Trueno, a firework accident causes her to abandon the candidacy. Fortunately, campaign member Gonzalo remembers about Lorena's twin and decides to search for her so that she can substitute Lorena and therefore the campaign can resume.
