Erskine Sanford (November 19, 1885 – July 7, 1969) was an American actor in films from the late 1930s. A member of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre company, he also appeared in several of Welles' films, most notably as the bumbling, perspiring newspaper editor Herbert Carter in Citizen Kane.

John Gaylord is in Florida, looking for a new place to live. Gaylord is a former scientist who now suffers from epilepsy, a fact he keeps hidden from Ann Gracie, a widow who rents him her house. Ann has introduced him to her friends C.L. and Thalia Shawn, a married couple who live nearby. Ann is upset because she believes she can still hear the voice of her late husband Bill, who was killed in the war. John has an epileptic seizure. A doctor tells him his condition is worsening. He and C.L., an artist, have discussions of whether there is life after death. Ann's sister Lisa develops a romantic interest in him, but John falls for Ann instead. Eddie Tayloe (Madison) is a reporter assigned to the Ft. Worth desk of a Dallas newspaper, and as the two neighboring cities are feuding, therefore has nothing to do. He dreams of becoming a New York playwright, and a small inheritance from his grandfather gives him his chance. Quitting his job, he begins the long drive. Picking up hitchhiker Perry Denklin (Lynn), also looking for fame and fortune in New York, he shares with her encounters with various eccentric characters. Chuck Arnold (Dan Dailey) is a bandleader during the 1920s. He meets hometown girl Peggy Mayhew (Jeanne Crain), a flapper script girl, at one of the band's presentations and the next day they get married. Though she loves him, life on the road becomes increasingly difficult for her, and eventually, with the rise of the Great Depression, in 1929, she tires of it and returns to her country home. Unable to find new bookings, he soon joins her and brings with him Oscar Hoffman (Oscar Levant) his acerbic, cynical manager. The bandleader finds the pastoral life a crashing bore and so heads for the big city to find fortune. Fortunately, this time, he succeeds and happiness is the result.

After his release from prison, gangster Eddie Kagle (Paul Muni) is killed by his partner in crime, Smiley Williams (Hardie Albright). Kagle ends up in Hell, where "Nick" (Claude Rains) offers him a chance to escape hell and avenge his own death in exchange for help with a problem. Kagle looks exactly like Judge Frederick Parker, an upright man who is causing Nick distress because he is entirely too honest. Nick fears that Parker may cause him more anxiety in future, as he is running for governor of his state. Nick wants to destroy Parker's reputation and Kagle readily agrees to have his soul transferred into Parker's body.
