Espen Sandberg est un réalisateur norvégien né le 17 juin 1971 à Sandefjord en Norvège. Il forme un duo avec Joachim Rønning appelé les « Roenberg ».
Ils réalisent ensemble quelques films pour promouvoir l'Armée norvégienne. En 1995, ils créent leur société de production audiovisuelle Roenberg, association de leurs noms de famille et qui deviendra leur surnom. Ils réaliseront ainsi plusieurs spots publicitaires (Airbus, Nintendo, Coca-Cola, Nokia, ...) et clips musicaux. En 2001, ils réalisent le spot Rex pour Budweiser, diffusé durant le Super Bowl XXXV. En 2008, Espen et Joachim réalisent la publicité Train Loop pour Norsk Hydro, qui obtient notamment un prix au Festival international de la publicité de Cannes.
En 1997, il réalise, toujours avec Joachim Rønning, le court métrage Dag 1. Ils passent au long métrage en 2006 avec le western Bandidas, coécrit et produit par Luc Besson. En 2008, ils réalisent pour Max Manus, opération sabotage, un film de guerre biographique sur Max Manus, un résistant norvégien durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le film sortira directement en vidéo en France.
En 2012, il reste dans le film historique avec Kon-Tiki, qui retrace la traversée de Thor Heyerdahl à bord du Kon-Tiki. Le film est notamment nommé aux Oscars 2013 et Golden Globes 2013 dans la catégorie du meilleur film étranger.
En mai 2013, il est révélé qu'il mettra en scène, avec Joachim Rønning, le 5e volet de la saga Pirates des Caraïbes, Pirates des Caraïbes : La Vengeance de Salazar.

After fighting the Soviets as a volunteer during the Winter War in Finland, Max Manus returns to Norway, finding it occupied by the Nazis. He joins with the Norwegian resistance movement in their fight against the Germans but is arrested. He manages to escape to Scotland where he receives British Commando training before being sent back to Norway to carry out sabotage missions against the occupying forces. Returning to Norway with his friend Gregers Gram, his first mission is an attack on German supply ships. He is spectacularly successful, and soon he becomes a special target for the local Gestapo chief Siegfried Fehmer. Manus, however, avoids capture, and with Gram and Gunnar Sønsteby he forms the so-called "Oslo Gang".

Set in Mexico during the 1850s, the film tells the story of Sara Sandoval (Salma Hayek) and María Álvarez (Penélope Cruz). María is an uneducated, poor farm-girl whose caring father is being forced off his land by a cruel U.S. land baron, named Tyler Jackson (Dwight Yoakam). Sara is the highly educated, wealthy daughter of the arrogant owner of the nearby properties, and has recently returned from Europe where she attended numerous grade schools and colleges in England, Spain, and France for several years. In one fell swoop, both María's and Sara's fathers fall under attack by the baron, (Sara's father is killed, María's is shot but survives) giving him free rein in the nearby territories. As an act of revenge, María and Sara team up to become bank robbers, stealing and giving back to the poor Mexicans who had lost their lands.
