An updated adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos' classic 18th Century tale of seduction, betrayal and revenge set in the modern 1960s world of Parisian high society. The beautiful Madame de Merteuil (Catherine Deneuve) seeks vengeance against her ex-lover Gercourt (Andrzej Zulawski) when he becomes engaged to her young goddaughter, Cécile (Leelee Sobieski). Isabelle Eberhardt (Mathilda May) travels from North Africa to be with her father, who is dying in Geneva. Shortly after his death, the wife of Marquis de Mores summons Eberhardt to Paris. de Mores has disappeared in North Africa, and his wife wished to hire Eberhardt to track him down, as she is familiar with the region. Eberhardt settles in Algiers, though she quickly abandons the search for de Mores due to interference from the French authorities, and assumes that de Mores is dead. The film tells the story of Jenny, a British teenager, who has left home for the first time and is going to college in Paris in the early 1960s. Soon she is smitten by a local Parisian. Although he is a romantic guy, Jenny wants him to prove his love by reciting a few lines to her from Romeo and Juliet, something he finds a tad idiotic. Jenny is crushed when he outright refuses, but later prevails. From then on she runs into situation after situation in dealing with her crazy friends, a few other young men who find her attractive and, lastly, her French host family headed over by a strict Madame Paroche who is none too pleased to see Jenny having any sort of social life whatsoever.

Dans une somptueuse villa de la Côte d'Azur, habitent deux frères et deux sœurs; Marlène, l'aînée, ses frères Dimitri et Boule, et Laetitia la petite dernière. Leurs parents, souvent en déplacement de longue durée pour raisons professionnelles, les ont confié à leur gouvernante espagnole Avocados. Un après-midi, alors que les enfants se trouvent à la plage avec Avocados, ils provoquent accidentellement sa noyade. Malgré cet accident, ils gardent leur sang froid, retournent calmement à la villa et profitent allégrement de l'absence de la gouvernante. Cependant, un inconnu (Alain Delon) qui a observé de loin toute la scène, menace de chantage le petit groupe et s'installe dans la villa. Petit à petit, il prend l'ascendant sur le groupe et surtout sur les armes de chasse présentes dans la maison, ce que n'apprécie guère Marlène devenue malgré elle le chef de famille.
