Franklyn Seales (July 15, 1952 – May 14, 1990) was an American film, television and stage actor. He was best known for his portrayals of business manager Dexter Stuffins in the 1980s sitcom, Silver Spoons, and real-life convicted cop killer Jimmy Lee (Youngblood) Smith in the 1979 film The Onion Field.

A squad of nine Louisiana National Guard soldiers convene in a Louisiana swamp for weekend maneuvers. Joining the squad is Corporal Hardin (Boothe), a cynical transfer from the Texas National Guard, who quickly becomes disgusted with the behavior and arrogance of the men. A professional engineer and a married man in his civilian life, he wants no part of a date with prostitutes that PFC Spencer (Carradine) has arranged for the men. Nevertheless, he is befriended by the amiable Spencer, the two seeming to agree that they are the only level-headed soldiers in the squad.

In 2273, a Starfleet monitoring station, Epsilon Nine, detects an alien force, hidden in a massive cloud of energy, moving through space towards Earth. The cloud destroys three of the Klingon Empire's new K't'inga-class warships and the monitoring station en route. On Earth, the starship Enterprise is undergoing a major refit; her former commanding officer, James T. Kirk, has been promoted to Admiral and works in San Francisco as Chief of Starfleet Operations. Starfleet dispatches Enterprise to investigate the cloud entity as the ship is the only one in intercept range, requiring her new systems to be tested in transit.
