Franz Waxman, né Franz Wachsmann, est un compositeur américain d'origine allemande, né le 24 décembre 1906 à Königshütte (actuellement en Pologne), mort le 24 février 1967 à Los Angeles (Californie). Compositeur de très nombreuses musiques de film, il est particulièrement connu, dans le domaine musical, pour sa Carmen Fantaisie pour violon, d'abord composée pour le film Humoresque puis reprise pour le violoniste Jascha Heifetz. Elle reste une des pièces les plus difficiles et les plus jouées au violon.

Biography

Il débute en Allemagne dans l'orchestration de la musique de Friedrich Hollaender dans le film L'Ange bleu (Der blaue Engel) en 1930. Puis, il écrit quelques musiques de films allemands. D'origine juive, il émigre en France en 1933 avant d'arriver aux États-Unis en 1935.

Compositeur de nombreuses musiques de film, il fut nommé 12 fois pour les Oscars de la meilleure musique de film et gagna l'Oscar deux années consécutives : (1950) et (1951). Parallèlement, il fonda en 1947 le Festival International de Musique de Los Angeles et fut à sa tête pendant 20 ans. Ce festival organisa les premières mondiales de compositeurs tels Igor Stravinsky, William Walton, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Dmitri Chostakovitch et Arnold Schönberg.

Young cello student Ariane Chavasse (Audrey Hepburn) eavesdrops on a conversation between her father, widowed private detective Claude Chavasse (Maurice Chevalier), and his client, "Monsieur X" (John McGiver). After learning of his wife's daily trysts with American business magnate Frank Flannagan (Gary Cooper), Monsieur X announces he will shoot Flannagan later that day. Claude is nonchalant, regretting only the business he will lose (Flannagan is a well-known international playboy with a long history of numerous casual affairs). Paul Robaix (Montand), a famous director, wants to shoot a film in Japan inspired by Madama Butterfly. The film opens in the 16th century, when Russia and Eastern Europe were divided into small sections and principalities that fought each other or against one enemy: in this case, Turkey. It starts with a battle raging between the Turks and the Poles. The Poles are losing until the Cossacks arrive to save the day.
