Gareth Huw Evans is a Welsh film director from Hirwaun, but who is now based in Indonesia. He is best known for bringing the Indonesian martial art, pencak silat, into world cinema, in two of his films: Merantau and The Raid, the latter of which was featured in the Sundance Festival in 2012.
Evans graduated from University of Glamorgan with a MA in Scriptwriting for Film and Television, and had made his living helping people learn Welsh over the Internet. After directing a small-budget film called Footsteps, Evans was hired as a freelance director for a documentary about pencak silat. He became fascinated with silat, and also discovered Indonesian martial artist Iko Uwais, who was working as a deliveryman for a phone company. Evans cast Uwais as the star in the movie Merantau which was released in 2009 and was a cult hit. Evans planned to produce a larger action film, but scaled the production budget down, and created an action film called Serbuan Maut or The Raid.

Gareth Evans est né et a grandi à Hirwaun, Cynon Valley. Il obtient un Master of Arts en écriture de scénario de l'Université de Glamorgan. Après avoir réalisé Footsteps, un premier long métrage à petit budget, il est engagé pour réaliser un documentaire sur l'art martial indonésien : le Pencak-Silat. Fasciné par ce sport, il découvre Iko Uwais qui était livreur pour une compagnie téléphonique et l'engage pour tenir le premier rôle dans Merantau. The film opens with Indonesian SWAT officer Rama praying, practicing silat and bidding goodbye to his wife, who is pregnant with his child. Rama joins a 20-man elite police squad, including Officer Bowo, Sergeant Jaka, and Lieutenant Wahyu, for a raid on an apartment block in Jakarta's slums. The team intends to capture crime lord Tama Riyadi, who owns the block and lets criminals around the city rent rooms under his protection. Arriving undetected, the team sweeps the first floors and subdues various criminal tenants; they also temporarily detain an innocent tenant delivering medicine to his sick wife. Continuing undetected to the sixth floor, the team is spotted by a young lookout, who passes the message to another guy to raise the alarm before he is shot and killed by Wahyu.

The plot follows Yuda, a Minangkabau from West Sumatra and an expert in silat. As part of the merantau (journeying) tradition, he leaves his home to seek experience and success. He plans to teach silat to the children of Jakarta. On his bus journey, he meets Eric, a fellow exponent of the art. When he hears of Yuda's plan, Eric becomes sombre, and warns him that the city is quite different from what Yuda is used to, and also that it is difficult to make a living teaching the art. Yuda finds that the address where he was meant to stay has been torn down, so he becomes homeless. His wallet is stolen by a child named Adit. Chasing the thief, Yuda then encounters the thief's sister, Astri, quarrelling with her boss, Johnny. When Johnny begins abusing Astri, Yuda intervenes. Yuda saves Astri but instead of gratitude, he is rebuked because she had become jobless as a result. The next day, Yuda sees Astri once again being beaten by Johnny. He intervenes again only to be beaten at first by his thugs. He quickly recovers and saves Astri from Johnny, while saving her he brutally scars Johnny's boss, Ratger. Ratger's associate, Luc tries to calm down Ratger, but to no avail as Ratger decides to stay in the city to hunt down Astri and Yuda.
