Jackson was born and raised in Harlem, New York and graduated from Fordham Prep in Bronx, NY and Harvard College in Cambridge, MA. He worked with Doug McHenry as co-producer on such projects as Krush Groove, Jason's Lyric, New Jack City, and Body Count in which he made a cameo appearance as a ticket clerk. Jackson was co-director of the second installment of the House Party series. Subsequently he was President of Motown Records and founded an internet-based media company, Urban Box Office, with Adam Kidron and Frank Cooper.
Jackson died of a stroke in 2000. He is survived by his wife, daughter, mother, sister and brother. The George Jackson Academy in New York City was founded in his memory.

The film begins with a tunnel collapse at the Sonderditch mine, in a scene that establishes the courage of Slater and his chief miner, 'Big King', and the bond of trust between them. This is contrasted with the contempt with which some other white managers treat the black miners. It is soon revealed that the collapse was no accident, but part of a plan by a London-based criminal syndicate, which includes the mine-owner's son-in-law Manfred Steyner, to destroy the mine so that the syndicate members can profit from share-dealing. This will be done by drilling through a deep underground wall or 'dyke' which is all that prevents an adjacent reservoir of water from flooding the mine.

After Play gives Kid's college scholarship check to a con artist Sheila Landreaux posing as a record executive. Kid, Play, Bilal, Stab, Zilla,& Pee Wee go to the record company to cut and record a demo until the cops arrive and tell them don't give no money to Sheila, Kid and Play fight each other over the scholarship check. The con artists Sheila and Rick sweet talk,manipulate and trick Sydney's college roommate Zora into signing a record deal with them. Kid is doing a page assignment for Professor Sinclair while Play, Bilal, and Jamal are having fun with girls in Kid's dorm room. Kid is given one week by the dean (Dean Kramer) to pay his tuition fee or face being kicked out of college. The dean takes Kid's student ID, The deans assistant Miles helps Kid with an extension and a job in the kitchen working for Mr.Lee in order to stay in college and to make expenses meet. Kid steals the key to the faculty dining hall. In order to raise the money, Kid, Play, Bilal and Kid's roommate, Jamal secretly hold a pajama themed party for the students in the faculty dining hall to raise money for Kid to stay in college until Play sees the con artists and Kid sees Miles with Sydney. Kid, Play and campus security go upstairs to stop the con artists and Miles. Kid fights Miles on the faculty dining roof. The dean and the police comes in to stop the party. Play tells the dean where Kid's check went to the con artists, Rick and Sheila are arrested and Miles is arrested and fired from his job. The dean tells Kid,Play,Bilal and Jamal to clean up the faculty dining hall or they will face expulsion. Mr.Lee arrives and he is disappointed at Kid for throwing the party in the faculty dining hall without permission and threatens Kid until he gives the money to Mr.Lee for the damages. Kid goes to his pop's grave in the cemetery feeling down until Play arrives, Kid still mad at Play for the check and moves out of the college dorm until Play arrives with the tuition money and gives it to Kid and apologizes to him and they become friends, Kid moves back to his dorm to finish college. Meanwhile,Kid's former high school rivals Stab, Zilla & Pee Wee take jobs as campus security in order to make Kid's life miserable one more time as Kid tries to balance work and study along with his relationship with Sydney.

In 1972 North Vietnam, short-timer Marines are dispatched by helicopter to conduct their last mission: to evacuate the survivors from a POW camp abandoned by the Viet Cong. The landing zone - which they expect to be cold - is actually hot (under fire) and after a short fight, only four members of the rescue mission survive. SSgt. Barkley and Hoover have a brief fight after Hoover wants to radio for an evacuation and Barkley insists they finish the mission. During their fight a mortar lands nearby, knocking them both into a swamp. Barkley saves Branche from drowning. They are joined shortly by Brooks and Evans. The soldiers defer to the ranking Marine, SSgt. Barkley, who insists that they press on to a nearby cathedral. They reach the building and kill several NVA soldiers. At morning, they are planning their next move when they are ambushed by more NVA soldiers including tree snipers. After a firefight they manage to kill the soldiers with the help of Cpl. Pippins, who appears from the brush and also begins attacking them. After subduing Pippins they look for the rest of his platoon and discover them murdered and their radio missing. They decide to tie Pippins up and bring him along as they march toward the POW camp. The group then recollect about each of their individual reasons for joining the Marines. SSgt Barkley was a preacher at a church until he came home to his bedroom seeing his wife in bed having sex with another man, Barkley shoots and kills the man and catches the train out of town. Hoover works for a meat packing place until he got fired for stealing meat. Cole tries to buy a new house, but he is turned down by the real estate agent,because of his credit. Brooks tells his girlfriend that he's joining the Marine Corps to be like his grandfather, Pippins was working for Ray until he is killed by gangsters and chased into the military enlistment line without getting caught. While Cole and Barkley go ahead to survey the area, Hoover and Brooks smoke cannabis and talk about Brooks' girlfriend, who just dumped him via the mail. During their break, Pippins escapes and takes Brooks' pistol. The four men regroup and head out without Pippins. When they reach the camp, they discover a deranged Pippins holding a Vietnamese woman hostage. After killing the woman in front of them, Pippis turns on them with a gun and is killed by SSgt. Barkley. After seeing the camp is empty, the men realize they are expendable decoys. They radio in and are informed that the Marines cleared the POW camp four hours earlier, and that they have 20 minutes to reach their pickup point before the entire area is bombed. As the men go to leave bombs begin dropping on them. They escape the bombardment and head through the jungle to the landing zone, but are ambushed by more NVA soldiers. Brooks is killed, and Cole and Barkley wounded. Hoover goes back and rescues Barkley and the three men are evacuated by helicopter. During an epilogue, we are told that Cole became a career Marine who retired after 20 years of service, SSgt. Barkley took a job counseling troubled teens in Georgia, and Hoover went back home, married his girlfriend and opened up his own business.

Rick Rubin produces their records. When Run-D.M.C. has a hit record and Russell doesn't have the money to press records, he borrows money from a street hustler. At the same time, Russell and his brother Run are both competing for the heart of R&B singer-percussionist Sheila E.
