Gerard est né à Little Rock, dans l'Arkansas, d'une mère enseignante à l'université et d'un père vendeur. Alors qu'il fréquentait l'école secondaire catholique Little Rock pour garçons, il était impliqué dans le théâtre. Adolescent, il travaillait dans une épicerie Kroger. En 1960, il fréquente le Maryknoll Seminary à Glen Ellyn, dans l'Illinois, et joue le rôle principal dans une production entièrement masculine de The Music Man. The story follows the characters of a TV journalist, Susan Allison (Hewitt), working on a profile of a woman, Caroline Thomas (White), whose husband naval aviator Lt. Neil Thomas was declared MIA sixty years ago during World War II. Susan immediately clashes with Caroline's grandson, Lucas Thomas (Faris), when he overhears her referring to the potential story as a fluff piece, rather than the very personal story it is, since she herself doubts if pure and true love exists. She apologizes, and manages to start the interview and starts spending time with both Caroline and Lucas. An unscrupulous land developer, Big Jim Burns, ignores the protests of Native Americans as he violates their ancestral burial grounds. The local sheriff, Steve Evans, is caught in the middle of the conflict, as he is half Native American and half Caucasian. When one of Burns' construction crews unearths an ancient relic, they unleash a giant skeletal monster that proceeds to kill everyone in its path. Evans must deal with his rebellious daughter, unhelpful bureaucrats, and Johnny Black Hawk, a Native American who agitates for violence. After consulting with the local chief, Storm Cloud, Evans learns he must locate the relic and use it in ritual combat against the monster. Once the sheriff acquires the relic, Johnny Black Hawk attempts to take it from Evans and use it to get vengeance on the town; Evans is forced to kill him in self-defense. After donning war paint, Evans goes on to fight and ultimately defeat the Bone Eater.

In 1987, NASA astronaut Captain William "Buck" Rogers is piloting the space shuttle Ranger 3 when he flies into an unexpected space phenomenon and is frozen for 504 years. In the year 2491, his shuttle is found drifting in space by the alien ship Draconia, which is headed to Earth for a trade conference, under the command of Princess Ardala and her aide de camp, Kane, a former native of Earth. Rogers is revived from his cryogenic sleep. Princess Ardala is visibly attracted to Buck, but Buck rebuffs the Princess and is put back on his shuttle and sent towards earth.
