Gilbert “Gil” Cates (June 6, 1934 – October 31, 2011), born Gilbert Katz, was an Award winning American film director and television producer, director of the Geffen Playhouse, and founding dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. Between 1990 and 2008, he produced the Academy Awards telecast 14 times.

Gene Garrison (Gene Hackman) is a widowed New York college professor who is in a long distance relationship with a woman in California.
