On her birthday, Margherita (Monica Vitti) receives a video camera from a friend, who is a film director (Elliott Gould). She decides to use the device to keep a diary of her life. As the camera is capable of recording automatically, snippets usually feature her talking. However, on one occasion, Margherita leaves the camera in her bedroom as it was still recording; it catches Margherita's husband, Paolo (Gino Pernice), who has always had a distant demeanor to her, as he cheats on her with her best friend (Catherine Spaak). A secret scandal ensues in their separation with Paolo's departure and Margherita going into a deep depression, even to the point of contemplating suicide. Her friend, the director who gave her the camera, examines the film, and concludes that it is interesting material for an actual movie.

Primo Baffo (Renato Pozzetto) est une sorte de chanteur de cabaret qui amuse les soldats avec ses chansons et ses sketches pendant la guerre. Il fait tout pour éviter d’être enrôlé et partir à la guerre. Mais à la fin de son spectacle, il est amené de force devant le colonel pour la conscription. Il essaie de se faire passer pour un homosexuel mais sans résultat. Arrivé au front, il croise une jeune fille misérable nommée Marianna (Laura Antonelli) lors d’une patrouille dans un village. Il cherche à la séduire et lorsqu’il se trouve déshabillé, elle lui vole tous ses vêtements et effets personnels et s’enfuit avec son complice. Les trois se retrouvent à nouveau quelques jours plus tard et Primo veut se venger. Mais la guerre les rattrape. Après quelques épisodes tragi-comiques au front face aux allemands, Primo et son copain Torno (Aldo Maccione) se cachent dans le grenier d’une masure bientôt occupée par les Uhlans, en terrain conquis. Ils assistent alors, impuissants dans leur cachette, aux derniers outrages que les soldats font subir à Marianna. Mais celle-ci finira par se venger.

The film is divided into four episodes. In the first Paolo Villaggio plays the role of a sailor from Genoa who learns from his doctor that he will soon become a woman. He begins to make plans and to daydream of what it will be like to be a woman. In the second episode Adriano Celentano is a former dancer in Emilia Romagna who now trains a woman for boxing fights. When he meets a beautiful emilian girl who is enrolling in a dance competition where a large sum of money will be awarded to the winners, Adriano does not miss the opportunity. He first tries to kill the boxer woman he works with, called "King Kong" and then leaves to go dancing with the girl, winning one turn after another. But as the couple wins the first prize Adriano is arrested by the police. In the third episode Renato Pozzetto plays the role of a poor mason from Milan who bets with some friends that he will be able to seduce the wife of his boss. Renato will succeed but will pay the consequences. In the last episode Alberto Sordi plays the role of hick Roman Nando Moriconi (same character of the film Un americano a Roma by Steno - 1954), this time he works as a body guard of a prominent Italian financier who has been the victim of many attempts to kidnap him .

Salvatore Cannavone (Domenico Modugno) is a Sicilian cobbler-cum-shoe salesman who has worked for thirty years in New York City. He returns to his hometown where, although of modest means in America, he is considered a wealthy man and becomes the centre of attraction. He begins to live with his brother Raffaele (Pippo Franco), his wife Rosa (Luciana Paluzzi), and his stepdaughter Mariuccia (Eleonora Giorgi) and, starting from their first meet, he and Mariuccia get busy with games of seduction. Raffaelle notices Salvatore's interest in Mariuccia and attempts to make use of it to have him stay at their house and to exploit his wealth. On the other hand, Salvatore also has an eye on voluptuous Rosa and both Mariuccia and Rosa begin to see Salvatore's passion as a means to secure the economic benefits he provides, which eventually leads to a peculiar ménage à trois. Things get even more complicated when Mariuccia is betrothed to another man.
