Giuliano Montaldo (born February 22, 1930 in Genoa) is an Italian film director.
While he was still a young student, Montaldo was recruited by the director Carlo Lizzani for the role of leading actor in the film Achtung! Banditi! (1951). Following this experience he began an apprenticeship as an assistant director of Lizzani and Gillo Pontecorvo, as well as appearing in the 1955 Gli Sbandati.
In 1960 he made his debut as a director with Tiro al piccione, a film about the partisan resistance, which entered for a competition in Venice Film Festival in 1961. In 1965 he wrote and directed Una bella grinta, a cynical representation of the economic boom of Italy, winning the Special Prize of the Jury at 15th Berlin International Film Festival. He then directed the production Grand Slam (1967) which starred an international cast including Edward G. Robinson, Klaus Kinski, and Janet Leigh. His cinema career continued with Gott mit uns (1969), Sacco and Vanzetti (1971), Giordano Bruno (1973), a trilogy about the abuses of the military, judicial and religious power; Tempo di uccidere (1989–1991), with actor Nicolas Cage [1].
In 1982 he directed the television miniseries Marco Polo, which won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries.
In 1971 he was a member of the jury at the 7th Moscow International Film Festival.

En 1969, À l'aube du cinquième jour, dont Ennio Morricone compose la bande originale, n'obtient pas un succès en salle, mais vit une seconde fois à travers le générique d'Italiques.
En 1971, le réalisateur porte à l'écran la destinée tragique de Nicola Sacco et Bartolomeo Vanzetti, deux anarchistes accusés d'avoir organisé un braquage, dans Sacco et Vanzetti (Sacco e Vanzetti). Le film est sélectionné au Festival de Cannes où il obtient un prix d'interprétation masculine.
En 1982, Giuliano Montaldo réalise une importante fresque sur Marco Polo pour la télévision, déclinée en feuilleton.
Ennio Morricone est longtemps son compositeur attitré : ils collaboreront sur une douzaine d'œuvres, depuis Le Carnaval des truands (Ad ogni costo).
Lors de la 63e cérémonie des David di Donatello, il remporte le David di Donatello du meilleur acteur dans un second rôle pour Tutto quello che vuoi.

Giuliano Montaldo commence sa carrière en tant qu'acteur. Étudiant, il est recruté par le réalisateur Carlo Lizzani pour jouer dans le film Achtung! Banditi! qui sort en 1950. L'expérience le motive pour apprendre le métier de cinéaste. Il devient assistant réalisateur pour Carlo Lizzani et Gillo Pontecorvo notamment sur le film La Bataille d'Alger puis réalisateur en 1961, avec son premier film Le Commando traqué. Cette première œuvre traite de la résistance, elle est sélectionnée à la Mostra de Venise. Il participera aussi au film à sketchs Extraconiugale pour lequel il réalise La moglie svedese en 1964. Sophia is a recently divorced college professor who lives in Italy with her daughter Helena. The two of them are in a car accident on the same day that Helena loses her first tooth, and soon afterwards Helena begins to report strange visions to her mother. Investigating the history of the apartment in which they live, Sophia discovers that during the rule of Mussolini's Fascist party, the man who lived there brutally tortured his wife by removing her teeth and locking her in a closet to die. Helena begins speaking to an invisible apparition in the closet, and later begins buying teeth from other children at school, saying that she needs to give them to the tooth fairy. A teacher from her school investigates this cruel and unusual behavior, only to be attacked by a swarm of mosquitoes and killed. After ignoring a warning to leave the apartment from the elderly man who lives upstairs, they are attacked by the toothless ghost of the woman who died there. Sophia throws the teeth at her and they escape while she attempts to insert them into her mouth.

Italie, été 1943. Le fascisme s'effondre, Mussolini est destitué, le Royaume change d'alliance et les Allemands envahissent le pays. Début septembre, le gouvernement italien annonce la signature d'un armistice avec les Anglo-américains. C'est pourtant le prélude à de terribles affrontements dans toute la péninsule. Depuis le début de la guerre, la comtesse Luisa, l'épouse d'un homme d'affaires décédé, a quitté Milan pour se réfugier dans sa somptueuse villa des bords du Pô. Auprès d'elle, sont réunis son fils Andrea, son neveu Carlo, dont le père est un dignitaire fasciste, et un vieil ami de la famille, Ferruccio Nascimbene. Les jeunes hommes ont l'air plutôt insouciants. Carlo est toutefois le seul à saisir l'ampleur du drame national. De nombreux sans-abri arrivent des cités bombardées. Le maire du village demande à Andrea d'héberger une famille. Fasciné par la beauté de Lucia, une jeune ouvrière évacuée, ce dernier accepte d'accueillir la totalité des membres du foyer. Plus tard, en l'absence de sa mère retournée à Milan, Andrea va même cacher des soldats italiens déserteurs. Cet acte courageux suscite la sympathie de Carlo, secrètement mêlé à la Résistance, et l'amour de Lucia. Il en va tout autrement pour Ferruccio qui informe d'emblée les occupants allemands. Les soldats fuient dès lors vers la montagne en utilisant un camion dans lequel doivent prendre place Lucia, Carlo et Andrea. Au dernier moment, néanmoins, la venue de la comtesse modifie le comportement d'Andrea qui refuse de suivre ses compagnons. Retenu aux côtés de sa mère, Andrea entend au loin le crépitement des mitraillettes allemandes, signe d'une tragédie irrémédiable.
