Gottfried John ([ˈjoːn]; 29 August 1942 – 1 September 2014) was a German actor.
Il fit ses débuts au cinéma en 1971 dans le rôle principal d'un Heimatfilm critique tourné pour la télévision, Jaider – der einsame Jäger (Jaider, le chasseur solitaire). John travailla ensuite à plusieurs reprises avec Rainer Werner Fassbinder. En 1982 il incarna le missionnaire espagnol, critique de la politique coloniale et défenseur des droits de l’Homme, Bartolomé de Las Casas dans le film de Eberhard Itzenplitz Die Rückkehr der weißen Götter (Le retour des dieux blancs).
Il fait une apparition en tant que figurant dans le James Bond Rien que pour vos yeux en 1981. Il incarne l'un des deux tueurs qui poursuivent James Bond après le tremplin de saut à ski.
Il acquit une renommée internationale en incarnant le général Ourumov dans le film de James Bond GoldenEye de 1995.
Un an plus tard il jouait dans Der Unhold (Le Roi des aulnes) avec John Malkovich, Marianne Sägebrecht et Simon McBurney. Il a tenu aussi un rôle de premier plan (Reinhold Hoffman) dans la version du roman d’Alfred Döblin Berlin Alexanderplatz filmée en 14 épisodes par Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
En 2000 John a incarné Erich Kessler dans L'Échange (avec Meg Ryan et Russell Crowe).

Biography
Gottfried John est né de père inconnu. Il a grandi dans des foyers pour enfants lorsque le droit de garde fut retiré à sa mère. Il a vécu avec elle de 1960 à 1962 à Paris, ensuite à Berlin. Il a suivi des cours d’art dramatique auprès de Marlise Ludwig. Il fit ses débuts sur scène au théâtre Schiller de Berlin. En 1963 il a joué au théâtre Landesbühne de Hanovre, puis en 1965 à Krefeld, ensuite à Heidelberg.Il fit ses débuts au cinéma en 1971 dans le rôle principal d'un Heimatfilm critique tourné pour la télévision, Jaider – der einsame Jäger (Jaider, le chasseur solitaire). The series begins in 82 BC when Julius Caesar is an eighteen-year-old man. Caesar's mother, Aurelia, asks Sulla to show him mercy; out of respect for her, he promises to let Caesar live if he divorces his wife, Cornelia, but Caesar refuses. Sulla lets him go but orders Pompey to kill him and bring his heart to him. Pompey follows Caesar and tells him to leave Rome, which he does. Pompey buys a swine's heart from the market and tells Sulla that the heart is Caesar's.
