Helen Jerome Eddy (February 25, 1897 – January 27, 1990) was a motion picture actress from New York, New York. She was noted as a character actress who played genteel heroines in films such as Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1917).

Biography

Eddy was born on February 25, 1897, and was raised in Los Angeles, California. As a youth, she acted in productions put on by the Pasadena Playhouse. She became interested in films through the studios of Siegmund Lubin, which was based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In her youth they opened a backlot in her Los Angeles neighborhood. Eddy died of heart failure on January 27, 1990, in Alhambra, California, at the age of 92.

The governor of an unnamed western state, Hubert "Happy" Hopper (Guy Kibbee), has to pick a replacement for recently deceased U.S. Senator Sam Foley. His corrupt political boss, Jim Taylor (Edward Arnold), pressures Hopper to choose his handpicked stooge, while popular committees want a reformer, Henry Hill. The governor's children want him to select Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), the head of the Boy Rangers. Unable to make up his mind between Taylor's stooge and the reformer, Hopper decides to flip a coin. When it lands on edge – and next to a newspaper story on one of Smith's accomplishments – he chooses Smith, calculating that his wholesome image will please the people while his naïveté will make him easy to manipulate.

Jenny Swanson (Blondell) is a waitress in a small college town whose goal is to go to Paris. Jenny rationalizes a little gold-digging and blackmail to achieve her goal. She tries to explain this to the new professor Ronald Brooke (Douglas), and Brooke in turn tries to dissuade her from such schemes, telling her that "good girls go to Paris, too". When her first attempt at blackmailing ends with an attack of conscience and the necessity of leaving town. Instead of returning to her hometown as advised by Brooke, of whom she has grown fond, Jenny heads for New York. Brooke is also bound for New York where he is to marry the wealthy Sylvia Brand (Joan Perry).

The musical's story spans about forty years, from the late 1880s to the late 1920s. Magnolia Hawks is an eighteen-year-old on her family's show boat, the Cotton Palace which travels the Mississippi River putting on shows. She meets Gaylord Ravenal, a charming gambler, falls in love with him, and eventually marries him. Together with their baby daughter, the couple leaves the boat and moves to Chicago, where they live off Gaylord's gambling winnings. After about ten years, he experiences an especially bad losing streak and leaves Magnolia, out of a sense of guilt that he is ruining her life because of his losses. Magnolia is forced to bring up her young daughter alone. In a parallel plot, Julie LaVerne (the show boat's leading actress, who is part African-American, but "passing" as white) is forced to leave the boat because of her background, taking Steve Baker (her white husband, to whom, under the state's law, she is illegally married) with her. Julie is eventually also abandoned by her husband, and she becomes an alcoholic. Magnolia's becomes a success on the stage in Chicago. Twenty-three years later Magnolia and Ravenal are reunited at the theater in which Kim, their daughter, is appearing in her first Broadway starring role.

Dans le Chinatown de San Francisco, Rose Carleton, surnommée "Frisco Doll", travaille comme chanteuse dans la maison de jeux de Chan Lo. Cette même nuit, Rose tue Chan Lo en légitime défense, et elle embarque avec son jeune serviteur Fah Wong à bord du Java Maid. Son capitaine, Bull Brackett, tombe amoureux de Rose et lui donne sa cabine. Il accepte de débarquer Fah Wong à Seattle, et il y apprend que Rose est recherchée pour le meurtre de Chan Lo. Sœur Annie Alden, qui a embarqué à Seattle, est outrée par la moralité de Rose, mais lorsqu'Annie tombe malade, c'est Rose qui la soigne, impressionnée par la nature charitable de la jeune femme. Annie meurt au moment où l'inspecteur Jack Forrest embarque avec l'intention d'arrêter Rose. Celle-ci se fait alors passer pour Annie et elle arrive à convaincre avec l'aide de Bull que la morte est bien "Frisco Doll". Arrivés en Alaska, Rose et Jack commencent à s'apprécier mais un jour il entend une conversation entre elle et Bull qui lui fait comprendre la situation réelle.
