Henry Barakat (Arabic: هنري بركات, 11 June 1912, Cairo – 27 May 1997, Cairo) was one of the foremost film directors in Egypt. For decades, he directed some of the most famous actors, singers and dancers of the Arab world.
In the 1955 hit Days and Nights, he directed belly-dancer Zeinat Olwi in one of her most memorable performances.
Il met aussi son talent de réalisateur au service de chanteurs célèbres, comme Farid El Atrache et Abdel Halim Hafez. Il réalise, au Liban, deux des trois films musicaux de la grande chanteuse libanaise Fairouz: Safar Barlek et Bint el Hareth. Il est décédé en 1997. Il était marié et avait deux filles.

Biography
Né au Caire en 1914 dans une famille de Chawâms chrétiens (de rite grec-melkite-catholique) d'origine libanaise, Henri Barakat vient en France pour approfondir sa connaissance du Septième art. Il réalise au cours d'un demi-siècle de carrière quelques chefs-d'œuvre du cinéma égyptien, dont L'Appel du courlis (1959) et Le Péché (1965).Il met aussi son talent de réalisateur au service de chanteurs célèbres, comme Farid El Atrache et Abdel Halim Hafez. Il réalise, au Liban, deux des trois films musicaux de la grande chanteuse libanaise Fairouz: Safar Barlek et Bint el Hareth. Il est décédé en 1997. Il était marié et avait deux filles.

Azizah, a poor peasant, portrays worker oppression in this somber social drama. She gets savagely raped by a guard when she goes into the fields to gather potatoes. She does not reveal what had happened to her husband who is suffering from an illness. She conceals the pregnancy and throttles the baby after it is born. She also dies soon thereafter. The migrant workers rally around her memory as she becomes a martyr to the cause of the struggling peasants.

Amna is a young woman that witnesses the death of her older sister by her uncle, who had abandoned her family and left them with no support. She understands from her mother that her sister deserves to die because she dishonors the family. Amna doesn't agree. She believes that her uncle should be blamed for their conditions. She seeks revenge from the engineer who swayed her sister and lied to her thus causing her death. Amna moves to his house to work as a maid and tries to poison him several times, but all her plans fail. She discovers it's impossible to kill him. This engineer starts to approach her, but she resists him, which makes him even more attracted to her.

Au Caire, Asfour (Farid El Atrache) est chanteur dans un théâtre. Il est amoureux de sa partenaire la danseuse Aliya, elle-même fille du directeur du théâtre et sur le point d'épouser l'homme d'affaires Mimi Bey qui leur apporte une dot importante. À cause d'un quiproquo, Asfour se croit aimé d'Aliya et entreprend de demander sa main à son père. Ce dernier prend la demande en considération, mais à la condition qu'Asfour offre une dot plus élevée. Comme ce dernier est sans le sou, la demande échoue. Alors qu'Asfour désespéré se lamente dans un jardin, il fait la rencontre d'un vieil homme à l'air bienveillant, personnage mystérieux qui lui apparait parfois brièvement. L'apparition lui donne rendez-vous dans une grotte le soir même. Accompagné de son alter ego Bou'ou, personnage à la fois énergique et gaffeur, Asfour va au rendez-vous où l'homme lui remet un objet qui pourra lui donner le bonheur à la condition qu'il en fasse bon usage : c'est une lampe magique dont sort une séduisante ifrit, Kahramana (Samia Gamal). Celle-ci, invisible pour tout autre que lui, le confond avec son amour, le démon Astaroth, dont Asfour a joué le rôle.
