In 1940, Nazi Germany invades Great Britain by drilling under the English Channel and up through the cobblestones on Whitehall. The film starts with a flashback to 1803 in India, where Sergeant Sharpe (Sean Bean) leads a patrol to an East India Company outpost. He arrives shortly before another supposedly friendly group of soldiers led by Major William Dodd (Toby Stephens). In a treacherous surprise attack, Dodd's men kill the entire garrison, leaving no witnesses, and makes off with the payroll. However, Sharpe is only wounded and manages to survive by pretending to be dead.

The movie follows the events and hardships suffered by the nine companies, roughly 550 men, of the United States Army 77th Infantry Division ("Statue of Liberty") that had been completely cut off and surrounded by German forces a short distance away in the Argonne Forest. The force was led by Maj. Charles W. Whittlesey, who was disparagingly described as a "New York lawyer" by his commanders. The battalion was part of what was supposed to be a three-pronged attack through the German lines. The battalion believed another American force was on its right flank and a French force on its left, not knowing that they had both retreated. The battalion lost contact with headquarters. Whittlesey sent several runners to headquarters, but none of them returned. He ended up having to rely on carrier pigeons to communicate. During the siege, American artillery began firing on the German position in the forest as the Americans cheered. However, the artillery began falling on the American line, killing numerous men in friendly fire. Whittlesey sends a pigeon to headquarters with a message saying they were being hit by their own artillery, saying, "For heaven's sake, stop it". The headquarters receives the message and stops firing. Witnessing the incident, the Germans attack the disoriented American force, but they are repelled by the Americans in fierce fighting and retreat back to their trenches.

Dans un cabaret, Poirot et Hastings assistent au spectacle donné par l'imitatrice Carlotta Adams. Poirot y fait la rencontre de la fameuse actrice Jane Wilkinson. Il accepte de rendre visite à son mari, Lord Edgware, afin de le prier de reconsidérer au plus vite la question du divorce. À sa grande surprise, Poirot apprend de la bouche de Lord Edgware que celui-ci a déjà consenti à accorder le divorce à sa femme, et de plus, qu'il lui a déjà envoyé il y a quelque temps une lettre lui faisant part de sa décision. Plus tard, l'inspecteur Japp de Scotland Yard apprend à Poirot que Lord Edgware a été assassiné et que les soupçons se portent sur sa femme. En effet la domestique d'Edgware jure avoir vu cette femme au moment du crime. Mais Jane Wilkinson participait à ce moment-là à une soirée donnée par Sir Montague Corner. Poirot commence son enquête et découvre que Lady Edgware n'est pas la seule à avoir un mobile.

Poirot et Hastings sont invités à Windermere pour assister à un record à une tentative de vitesse sur eau de Charles Arundell organisé sur le lac Windermere. Poirot et Hastings goûtent à Deauville quelques jours de détente bien mérités. Peu de temps après leur arrivée, ils sont contactés par un certain Paul Renauld, un riche importateur de diamants, qui les informe de l'existence d'un vaste trafic de pierres précieuses au Chili. Peu de temps après ces confidences, l'homme est découvert mort par Hastings sur un parcours de golf. Dans sa poche, celui-ci trouve une lettre d'amour signée des initiales B.D. Bientôt, Giraud, de la Sûreté française, se met sur les rails pour démasquer le coupable. Vexé, Poirot lui lance le défi suivant: s'il arrête le coupable avant Giraud, celui-ci devra lui céder la pipe dont il ne se sépare jamais. Dans le cas contraire, le détective belge devra subir l'humiliation de se raser la moustache.
