Joseph Farrell MacDonald (June 6, 1875 – August 2, 1952) was an American character actor and director. He played supporting roles and occasional leads. MacDonald, who was sometimes billed as "John Farrell Macdonald", "J.F. Mcdonald" and "Joseph Farrell Macdonald" as well other variations, appeared as an actor in over 325 movies over a 41-year career from 1911 to 1951, and directed forty-four silent films from 1912 to 1917.

MacDonald was the principal director of L. Frank Baum's Oz Film Manufacturing Company, and he can frequently be seen in the films of Frank Capra, Preston Sturges and, especially, John Ford.

J. Farrell MacDonald est le réalisateur de 43 films américains, principalement des courts métrages, entre 1912 et 1917, donc exclusivement durant la période du muet. Parmi eux, trois sont réalisés en 1914 pour le compte de l'éphémère compagnie de production The Oz Film Manufacturing Company , dont l'un des fondateurs est L. Frank Baum, l'auteur du roman Le Magicien d'Oz.

Comme acteur, J. Farrell MacDonald débute au cinéma en 1911 et apparaît dans plus de 300 films américains (dont plus de 100 films muets) jusqu'en 1951. En particulier, il participe à 26 films (notamment 14 muets et 2 partiellement sonorisés) réalisés par John Ford : dans l'avant-dernier (La Poursuite infernale, en 1946), il interprète un de ses rôles les mieux connus, celui de 'Mac', le vieux barman. Mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent and Lois Lane are sent to the small town of Silsby for the inauguration of the world's deepest oil well. Unbeknownst to the drillers, however, the drill shaft has penetrated the underground home of the "Mole Men", a race of small, furry (though bald-headed) beings. The Mole Men come up through the shaft at night to explore the surface. When the creatures first emerge from the shaft, their sudden appearance scares the elderly night watchman to death. Lois Lane and Clark Kent arrive at the oil well and find the dead watchman. Subsequently, help arrives. Clark Kent and the foreman are exploring the surrounding area for signs of intruders when Lois sees one of the creatures and screams in terror. But no one believes her when she tells them what she saw.

William "Bill" Kluggs (Dan Dailey) is the first in his hometown of Punxatawney, West Virginia, to enlist in the Army Air Forces after the attack on Pearl Harbor, making his father Herman (William Demarest), mother Gertrude (Evelyn Varden) and girlfriend Marge Fettles (Colleen Townsend) proud. The whole town sees him off. Willie tries to become a pilot but washes out, although he proves to be so proficient at aerial gunnery that, rather than being sent to Europe to fight, he is made an instructor and assigned to a base near his hometown. After two years in the same place, he is branded a coward by the townsfolk, even though he continually requests a transfer into combat.
