Jacques Audiard ([ʒak odjaʁ]; born 30 April 1952) is a French film director and screenwriter; and the son of Michel Audiard, also a notable screenwriter and film director.

He won twice both the César Award for Best Film and the BAFTA Award for Best Film not in the English Language, in 2005 for The Beat That My Heart Skipped and in 2010 for A Prophet. He also won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. His film Rust and Bone competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

His 2015 film Dheepan won the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

Biography

Audiard was born in Paris. At the beginning of the 1980s he successfully began screenwriting, including Réveillon chez Bob! and Mortelle randonnée, Baxter, Fréquence Meurtre and Saxo.

In 1994, he directed the film Regarde les hommes tomber, a road movie with Mathieu Kassovitz and Jean-Louis Trintignant. The film won the César Award for the best first film and the prix Georges-Sadoul. Two years later he reunited with Mathieu Kassovitz and Jean-Louis Trintignant on his second movie Un héros très discret adapted from the eponymous novel by Jean-François Deniau.

His fourth movie, De battre mon cœur s'est arrêté, received 10 nominations at the Césars and won eight, among them the awards for best film, best director, best screenplay, best film music, and best cinematography.

He also released some music videos, among them Comme elle vient by Noir Désir where all the actors were deaf-mute and interpret the lyrics of the song in sign language. The beginning of the feature (a sequence with subtitles) created a minor scandal. It displayed three women discussing politics who come to the conclusion that "it is better to be deaf than to listen to that".

Angèle is a 40-year-old beautician who works at the title establishment in Paris. She has been an orphan from the age of eight, her father having killed her mother for suspected infidelity, and then killed himself when her infidelity was proved untrue. She picks up men to have short sex flings, but no longer believes in love, having hurt her former boyfriend, Jacques, whom she occasionally contacts out of loneliness, but who is never available at the same time as her. An unkempt younger man, Antoine, sees her at a cafe as she is being dumped by her latest fling, and falls in love with her. He stands outside the beauty shop to watch for Angèle, follows her to a café and declares his love for her, but she for once is lost for words and does not immediately return his feelings. Antoine also reveals that despite his feelings for her, he is engaged, but feels he is drifting away from his fiancée. However, despite her refusal to believe in love, Angèle gradually falls for Antoine.

Intense young "tough" Thomas Seyr is a 28-year-old real estate broker involved in shady business deals. His business partners, Fabrice and Sami, spend much of their time ruthlessly chasing squatters and illegal immigrants out of the buildings they have procured and trying to work their way around government housing regulations. Thomas is born to this kind of work; his father, Robert, is also involved in dodgy enterprises and sometimes calls upon Thomas to beat up people who refuse to pay. Tom shows a protective and defensive attitude toward his father who doesn't always appreciate what his son does for him–so much so that when his father introduces his new girlfriend to Tom, Tom undermines her to her face, and insults her to his father, insisting she is an opportunistic "whore." Later, when he tries to enlist her help to watch over his father, she tells him they broke up due to Robert changing his attitude and she is aware of Tom's backstabbing because Robert told her. Robert by this time is in danger from a Russian gangster, Minskov (Anton Yakovlev) who scammed him out of 300,000 Euros and Tom is worried for his safety.
