Ian et Barley Lightfoot ont perdu leur père très tôt. Parvana est une jeune fille vivant à Kaboul en Afghanistan, contrôlé par les talibans. Son père, Nurullah, autrefois enseignant, est amputé de la jambe droite, conséquence de la Guerre d'Afghanistan, ce qui le force à devenir colporteur afin de subvenir aux besoins de sa famille. À la suite d'une altercation avec l'un de ses anciens étudiants, Idrees, à qui il refuse la main de sa fille sous prétexte qu'elle est déjà fiancée (ce qui est faux), il se fait injustement emprisonner, laissant la famille en détresse car il est le seul homme adulte encore en vie, le fils aîné Sulayman étant mort quelques années plus tôt. Parvana se retrouve donc seule avec sa mère Fattema, sa sœur aînée Soraya et son petit frère Zaki. Puisque les femmes ont l'interdiction de sortir sans leur mari, leur père ou leur frère, la famille se retrouve isolée, sans nouvelles de Nurullah. Après que sa mère soit revenue battue car elle était sortie sans être accompagnée d'un homme de sa famille pour retrouver son mari et que Parvana ait tenté, sans succès, d'acheter de la nourriture au marché, elle décide de se couper les cheveux et de se vêtir en homme. Elle se fait donc passer pour le neveu de son père et prend comme nom « Aatish » afin de pouvoir subvenir aux besoins de sa famille. Le soir, lorsqu'elle rentre, elle divertit son jeune frère en lui inventant une histoire dans laquelle un jeune garçon part affronter le roi éléphant afin de reprendre les graines qu'il a volées.

After Don Cobain marries Wendy O'Conner, she gets pregnant and gives birth to their son Kurt Cobain. He is a hyperactive kid and at the age of three, his sister Kim is born. At the age of nine his parents divorce and he goes to stay with his dad. Don tells Kurt that he wouldn't get married again, but breaks his promise when he meets Jenny Westeby who already has two kids. They get married and have another kid Chad. Kurt tortures his siblings and Jenny has Don kick him out. Kurt goes to stay with his mom and his sister. He starts hanging out with a few kids he hates but hangs out with them so he can smoke marijuana. They go over to a girls house where they distract her and one of them grabs alcohol from the basement. They get away with this for only a month, and during that month Kurt gets suicidal. He decides that before he kills himself he wants to have sex first. He goes over to the girls house and when they are about to have sex, he leaves after being grossed out by how her vagina smelled. After a conversation with Buzz Osborne, he starts listening to punk rock. Two weeks before school gets out, he drops out due to lack of credits. He decides to make a band and meets Krist Novoselic. They form their band with Chad Channing on drums. After going through many names, they call the band Nirvana.

By 2045, humans have built weather machines to control the warming climate due to climate change and global warming. The machines break down when one day it begins to snow and doesn't stop. The Deathgames is a popular, controversial, and illegal web-show featuring a modern day gladiator arena where combatants fight to the death for the entertainment of online viewers, including a group of college students, and a group of Chinese office workers. Wisconsin insurance salesman Mickey Prohaska is in desperate financial straits. His wife JoAnn has thrown him out of the house, and he is willing to do or say practically anything to sell anybody a policy. Mickey accompanies another insurance agent he has just met, Bob Egan, to the farm of an elderly man named Gorvy Hauer. The house is a mess and Gorvy is absent-minded, perhaps a tad senile. He does not have much money and, the little he has, he seems to keep in a jar. Mickey tries to sell the old man some insurance anyway.
