Jessie Ralph (November 5, 1864 – May 30, 1944) was an American stage and screen actress, best known for her matronly roles in many classic motion pictures.

She was born Jessie Ralph Chambers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1864. She made her acting debut in 1880, at the age of sixteen. She made it to Broadway, where George M. Cohan cast her in many of his musicals, but she also excelled at dramatic roles. Although she made her Hollywood debut in 1916, she only became a permanent Hollywood actress in 1933. She was nearly 70 at this time, so her roles were restricted to those of dumpy old ladies, but her expertise at stealing scenes captured the imagination of cinema-goers of the time. Her best-known roles are as Greta Garbo's maid in Camille, and as W.C. Fields' battleaxe of a mother-in-law in The Bank Dick. She starred in 55 movies altogether, 52 between 1933 and 1941.

Jessie Ralph retired from Hollywood in 1941, after her leg was amputated. She died four years later in her home town Glouchester at the age of 79. She was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Biography

Mother and Father are mortified at Mytyl's behavior. That evening, Father is called on to report for duty the next morning in an unspecified war. That same night, Mytyl is visited in a dream by a fairy named Berylune (Jessie Ralph) who sends her and her brother Tyltyl (Johnny Russell) to search for the Blue Bird of Happiness. To accompany them, the fairy magically transforms their dog Tylo (Eddie Collins), cat Tylette (Gale Sondergaard), and lantern ("Light") into human form. The children have a number of adventures, visiting the past and their dead grandparents who come to life because they are being remembered, a scary adventure in the forest, the life of luxury, and the future, a land of yet-to-be born children. The dream journey makes Mytyl awake as a kinder and gentler girl who has learned to appreciate all the comforts and joys of her home and family. Mobster Mama McGann is about to be caught red handed while robbing a bank, but she manages to escape with the help of the naive songwriter Bob Gunther, who is clueless about the robbery. Since Mama has already stolen Bob's wallet during their very brief encounter, she is struck by guilt and decides to return the wallet as thanks for his help. Her son, Sonny McGann, is ordered to return the wallet and hand over a small reward to Bob. Sonny is not what you would call a typical gangster, having far too much artistic blood flowing in his veins. Instead of dreaming of inheriting Mama's business, he yearns to become a poet. He decides to create a song to his childhood sweetheart Sadie, a woman he hasn't met for ages, and in need of a songwriter, he kidnaps Bob to help him out. When Bob has finished writing the tune to Sonny's lyrics, and the song is recorded, Sonny forces the local radio stations and music stores to play it, threatening them with his henchmen. Bob tries to get away from Sonny by speaking his language, and pretends to be lovesick. He names a singer, Magda Delys, as the subject of his strong emotions instead of his real girlfriend Linda Carroll. Sonny decides to help out by forcing Magda to marry Bob, and arranges for a ceremony to take place. Before the wedding, Bob is kidnapped again, this time by Sonny's rival Big Foot Louie. Sonny tries to rescue Bob on his own, but when he gets to Louie's, Bob is already writing a love song for the gangster. Sonny and Louie start discussing a truce, and a possible musical business venture together, while Bob is forced by Sonny's goons to marry Magda. When Sonny comes back and interrupts the "ceremony" he finds that Magda in fact is his old school sweetheart Sadie. A double wedding is arranged, where Sonny marries Sadie, and Bob marries Linda.
