João Canijo (born 1957) is a Portuguese film director. His film Get a Life was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. His 2011 film Blood of My Blood was selected as the Portuguese entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards, but it did not make the final shortlist.

Biography

Il a étudié l'Histoire à l'Université de Porto, ne s'étant initié au cinéma qu'en 1980. Jusqu'en 1985, il a été l'assistant réalisateur d'auteurs comme Manoel de Oliveira, Wim Wenders, Alain Tanner ou encore Werner Schroeter.

En 1988, il réalise son premier long métrage, Três menos eu, qui fut sélectionné pour le Festival de Rotterdam de la même année. En 2004, son film Noite Escura fut présenté au Festival de Cannes, et il fut choisi comme candidat portugais à l'Oscar du meilleur film étranger.

Il a également travaillé comme metteur en scène.

Lisbon Story is partially a sequel to Wenders' 1982 film, The State of Things. The fictitious movie director in the previous film, Friedrich Munro, reappears, again played by Patrick Bauchau. In Lisbon Story Friedrich has moved to Lisbon, Portugal (the country where The State of Things was set). The principal character, Philip Winter (Rüdiger Vogler), a sound engineer, receives a postcard invitation from Friedrich to come to Lisbon to record sounds of the capital city for his forthcoming film. On arriving, the director is nowhere to be found, though he leaves cryptic messages. This sets in motion a mysterious quest.

The journey of Michael Padovic, a professor from the U.S.A, who arrives with his wife, Helene, at a Portuguese convent where he expects to find the documents needed to prove his theory: Shakespeare was born in Spain, not in England, and was Jewish.
