Garner was born in the Riverdale neighborhood, in the Bronx, New York. Her mother, Tami Gingold, a therapist, had a successful career in Israel around 30 years ago as a comedian. Her father, Thomas Garner, is a painter and an art teacher, originally from Shaker Heights, Ohio. She has an older sister, Anna, who is a writer, producer and an artist. Garner is Jewish (her father is Protestant and her mother is Jewish).Garner resides with her parents in their house in New York City. She considers actress Bette Davis to be a major influence on her acting style and citing Davis's performance in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

Divided over six chapters, "Grandma" tells the story of Elle, a lesbian poet coping with the recent death of her long-term life partner. She ends a four-month relationship with a younger admirer, Olivia, before receiving a visit from her 18-year-old granddaughter Sage, who is pregnant and requests $630 for an abortion. As Elle is broke and Sage has had her credit card confiscated by her overbearing mother, the two embark on a road trip to come to terms with their troubles. They visit the father of the child, who is unable to come up with much money. They then visit Elle's ex-husband Karl, who Elle has not seen in years. Elle tells him she needs to borrow the money for rent, and he requests a kiss in return. After an argument over how Elle left the relationship, he agrees to hand over the cash, then refuses when he learns Sage will have an abortion with it.

Marv (Mickey Rourke) regains consciousness on a highway overlooking the Projects, surrounded by several dead young men and a crashed police car, and with no memory of how he got there. He retraces his steps, recalling that since it's Saturday, he watched Nancy Callahan (Jessica Alba) dance at Kadie's Saloon. Stepping outside, he encounters four rich frat boys burning a homeless man alive. When Marv intervenes, the leader of the frat boys shoots him in the arm, calling him "Bernini Boy," which Marv mishears as "Bernie." They flee; Marv follows, stealing a Police car on the way, which he crashes into their car, leading to his blackout and memory loss. He follows the two surviving frat boys into The Projects, the neighborhood where he grew up. With the assistance of the deadly residents lurking in the shadows, he dispatches the frat boys. He questions the leader about being called "Bernini Boy" and learns that it is the brand of coat he is wearing. After slitting the boy's throat, he considers his coat and realizes he can't remember how he acquired it.

During a torrential downpour, a woman confusedly staggers into a store as the butcher receives a delivery. After several attempts to address her, she finally responds and explains that the foul weather has strongly affected her. The butcher says that it will get worse before it gets better, and she purchases groceries. As she leaves the store, she sees a poster that advertises missing teenage girls. The plot concerns 15-year-old Rachel McKnight, a member of a fundamentalist Mormon community in Utah, who, listening to a cassette recorder for the first time, hears a song by an obscure rock band on a blue cassette. Her brother, Mr. Will, takes it from her, stating that it is to be used only for God's purposes. When she finds herself to be pregnant, she is convinced that she has conceived miraculously, like the Virgin Mary, through the medium of the cassette. After being questioned by her parents, her brother is blamed for impregnating her, and is asked to leave the community, while Rachel is told she will be married the next day. Rather than undergo a shotgun marriage arranged by her father Paul, she escapes to Las Vegas, along with Mr. Will, who is sleeping in the bed of the family's pickup truck. In Las Vegas she falls in with a group of skaters who live together and play in a band, after being drawn to one of the boys who wears a shirt with a cassette on it. She becomes romantically involved with Clyde, one of the skaters. One night he offers to marry her, and says that together they can look for the man on the tape, and that she can leave him when they find him. When a trip to Clyde's parents' house goes awry, Mr. Will is arrested, and Rachel flees. Remembering one of her mother's bedtime stories, she impulsively follows a red Mustang and discovers the man who recorded the tape, who is, in fact, her biological father. Finally, she decides to return to her community. Mr. Will is bailed out of jail by Rachel's father, who is looking for her. Together, he and Mr. Will drive out to the community, though they admit they have not formed a plan about what to do when they arrive. They discover Clyde, whose van has broken down on the highway, and proceed to the community. As she is about to be wed, her biological father, Mr. Will, and Clyde pull up in front of the church in the red Mustang and rescue her. Mr. Will returns to the community, with a recording that Rachel has made on the blue cassette. After playing the recording for his mother, she hugs him and leaves the room. Rachel's voice-over states that she firmly believes that God has fathered her child. Clyde and Rachel are living in a tent by the beach and hold hands as they walk through the waves. As the song on the blue cassette plays, the ocean laps the shore.

Early one morning, Martha flees from an abusive cult in the Catskill Mountains that is led by an enigmatic leader, Patrick. She phones her sister Lucy, eventually asking for her help. Lucy picks her up from a nearby bus station and takes Martha to her lake house in Connecticut which she shares with her husband, Ted. Martha only tells Lucy that she had been living with her boyfriend in the Catskill Mountains, leaving out all mention of the cult. During the following days, Martha continues to exhibit unusual behavior, with little regard for the norms of conventional American society.
