Biography
Juraj Jakubisko fait ses études à l'Académie du film de Prague (FAMU) et réalise dès 1962 des films remarqués : Mutisme (1962), Chaque jour porte un nom (1963), En attendant Godot (1965). En 1967, Les Années du Christ remporte douze distinctions mais, victime de la censure communiste et ne pouvant tourner que des documentaires, des courts-métrages et des émissions de télévision, il ne pourra finir son film Au revoir en enfer, les amis qu'en 1990. Il réussit malgré tout à sortir en 1979 Construis ta maison et plante un arbre puis L'Abeille millénaire et Mémé plumes en 1983.Il réalise en 1993 Il vaut mieux être riche et en bonne santé que pauvre et malade et, en 1997, Un rapport ambigu sur la fin du monde. En 2004 sort Post coitum et en 2008 Bathory, racontant la vie de la sanguinaire Élisabeth Báthory, film au plus gros budget de l'histoire du cinéma slovaque qui obtient un important succès en Europe.

The film is based on the story of Erzsébet Bathory, a Hungarian countess in the 16th and 17th centuries. Her story takes place in a part of the Kingdom of Hungary that is now Slovakia. In this retelling, the Countess is a healer who conducts medical experiments and rudimentary autopsies in a "hospital" beneath her castle. She forms a relationship with a reputed witch, Darvulia, who saves her from poisoning. The witch promises Erzsebet a son and eternal beauty. In return, Erzsebet must sacrifice both love and her reputation. Darvulia becomes Erzsebet's companion. Meanwhile, maidens in the area have been dying of seemingly unrelated causes, and Erzsebet is seen bathing in a large tub of red liquid as the girls' now-mutilated corpses are buried nearby. Two monks later conclude that the water is not blood but is simply colored red by herbs.

A magical and realistic vision of an unbalanced world takes place in a village in the mountains at the end of the world - at an unknown time. The village in a picturesque setting is a metaphor for the world and humanity at the rise of the 3rd millennium. During the 25 years when the story takes place, we can see change over several generations and various symbols of different civilizations, church and culture. The main motif of the film is the love between Verona and Goran. Their passionate relationship is so different from any other and so they have to be punished in the name of so-called morality and equality. By following them, the village people are trying to hide their transgressions against nature and themselves. Patriarchal rituals are in conflict with a civilization without God and equality. Nature punishes them with earthquakes. The houses of all the guilty people are destroyed. Wolves are a symbol of danger.

They meet at an anti-regime demonstration and become friends. They don’t want anything to do with politics, both want to get married and have kids, but also get rich. Crazy plans and risky attempts to realize their shared dreams land them in many sticky situations in the post-revolution chaos. Too much money gets in the way of the power of friendship.

With this background you have a part-dream sequence story of the two main characters coming back from the war - comedian Pepe and front line soldier Prengel that become best friends after discovering gold together. By coincidence these two meet Ester who is coming back from a concentration camp and now love enters the story with this melancholic Jewish girl. Three homeless people are trying to fulfill their idea of happiness. They chose the wrong time period. The monstrosity of the 1950’s is represented by a fanatic young communist, Želmíra, who turns their world upside-down.

Mrs. Winter, The Feather Fairy, rules the world and also, being so open hearted, raises little Jacob, who almost died in an avalanche. Life in the fairytale is perfect, the little boy is immortal, he doesn’t get older, and he has everything. Even though his life is perfect he watches human life through a looking glass. He sees a young girl Alžbetka growing into a young lady, and he desires to be a normal person and live with his love. J. My friend Federico Fellini persuaded Guilietta Massina to be the Feather Fairy and she brought a spark and lightness to the story.
