Kenneth George "Kenny" Baker (born 24 August 1934) is an English actor and musician. He is well-known for portraying the character R2-D2 in the popular science-fiction movie franchise Star Wars.

Biography

Kenny Baker est artiste de cirque et de cabaret avec Jack Purvis lorsque George Lucas l'embauche pour interpréter le rôle de R2-D2 dans Star Wars, épisode IV : Un nouvel espoir en 1977. Il manœuvre également le droïde dans les cinq autres épisodes de la saga, ce qui fait de lui le seul acteur avec Anthony Daniels à être présent dans les six premiers films.

Kenny Baker joue également un autre rôle dans Star Wars, épisode VI : Le Retour du Jedi en 1983 : Paploo, l'Ewok qui vole un speeder bike de l'Empire. Il était pressenti pour jouer Wicket mais tomba malade, et ce rôle fut attribué à Warwick Davis.

Le 29 avril 2014, Kenny Baker est officialisé au casting de Star Wars, épisode VII : Le Réveil de la Force. Kenny Baker n'apparaît cependant pas « physiquement » dans le film, et n'est crédité qu'en tant que « consultant pour R2-D2 ».

Parmi ses autres films, on note Elephant Man, Bandits, bandits (également avec Purvis), Amadeus (il y tient le rôle du commandeur) et Labyrinthe de Jim Henson. À la télévision, il apparaît dans la série médicale britannique Casualty.

Kenny Baker, atteint de nanisme, mesure 1,12 m. Bien que lui et sa femme soient atteints de nanisme, leurs deux fils n'ont pas hérité de ce caractère physique.

Il a résidé à Preston, en Angleterre.

Kenny Baker est touché par de graves ennuis de santé qui ont causé son absence à la convention Générations Star Wars et Science Fiction en 2007 et qui ont remis sérieusement en question son apparition dans la nouvelle trilogie Star Wars. Il meurt le 13 août 2016.

During a space battle over Coruscant between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist Alliance, Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker lead a mission to rescue the kidnapped Supreme Chancellor Palpatine from Separatist commander General Grievous. Ten years after the Trade Federation's invasion of Naboo, the Galactic Republic is threatened by a Separatist movement organized by former Jedi Master Count Dooku. Senator Padmé Amidala comes to Coruscant to vote on a plan to create an army of the Republic to assist the Jedi against this threat. Narrowly avoiding an assassination attempt upon arrival, she is placed under the protection of Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice Anakin Skywalker. The two Jedi thwart another attempt on her life and subdue the assassin, Zam Wesell, a shape-shifter who is killed by her bounty hunter client with a toxic dart before she can reveal his identity. The Jedi Council assigns Obi-Wan to identify and capture the bounty hunter, while Anakin is assigned to escort Padmé back to Naboo, where the two fall in love.

In response to taxation on trade routes in the Galactic Republic, the Trade Federation organizes a blockade of battleships around the planet Naboo. Supreme Chancellor Valorum dispatches Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi to negotiate with the Trade Federation leadership to end the blockade. There the Jedi try but fail to persuade the Gungan leader, Boss Nass into helping the people of Naboo, though they are able to obtain transportation to Theed, the capital city on the surface. They rescue Queen Amidala, the ruler of the Naboo people, and escape the planet on her royal starship, which is damaged as they pass the Federation blockade.

A prophecy states that a female child with a special birthmark will herald the downfall of the evil sorceress Queen Bavmorda. Bavmorda imprisons all pregnant women in her realm to prevent fulfilment of the prophecy. When the prophesied child is born, the mother begs the midwife to take her to safety. The midwife reluctantly accepts, and leaves Nockmaar castle unnoticed. The mother is executed, and the midwife is eventually found. Knowing she cannot escape, she sets the baby on a makeshift raft of grass and sends her down the river, hoping for fate to run its course. Bavmorda sends her daughter Sorsha and General Kael to find the baby so that the prophecy can never be fulfilled.

A childless Queen (Morgan Fairchild) is given a magical potion by a kindly elf (Kenny Baker). When the lovely Princess Rosebud is born, all the fairies are invited to bestow gifts upon the child. However, the fearsome Red Fairy is left off the guest-list because there are only eight special golden dinner plates and nine fairies in the kingdom. Enraged, she crashes the christening ceremony and curses Rosebud to a premature death from the prick of a spindle. The wise White Fairy, who was tardy and therefore unable to bestow her gift, remedies the curse by changing the death to a hundred years sleep, and the awakening of Rosebud with the kiss of true love. Luke Skywalker initiates a plan to rescue Han Solo from the crime lord Jabba the Hutt with the help of Princess Leia, Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2. Leia infiltrates Jabba's palace on Tatooine disguised as a bounty hunter with Chewbacca as her prisoner. Lando is already there disguised as a guard. Leia releases Han from his carbonite prison, but she is captured and enslaved. Luke arrives soon afterward but after a tense standoff, he is captured. After Luke survives his battle with Jabba's Rancor, Jabba sentences him and Han to death by feeding them to the Sarlacc. Luke frees himself and battles Jabba's guards. During the chaos, Boba Fett, who has remained at Jabba's palace since delivering Han, attempts to attack Luke, but Han inadvertently knocks him into the Sarlacc pit. Meanwhile, Leia strangles Jabba to death, and Luke destroys Jabba's sail barge as the group escapes. While the others rendezvous with the Rebel Alliance, Luke returns to Dagobah where he finds that Yoda is dying. Before he dies, Yoda confirms that Darth Vader, once known as Anakin Skywalker, is Luke's father, and there is "another Skywalker". The spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi confirms that this other Skywalker is Luke's twin sister, Leia. Obi-Wan tells Luke that he must fight Vader again to defeat the Empire.
