Kevin Macdonald (born 28 October 1967) is a Scottish director, best known for his films One Day in September, State of Play, The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void and Marley.

En 1995, il commence sa carrière cinématographique avec un documentaire pour la télévision, The Making of an Englishman, adaptation de la biographie de son grand-père, The Life and Death of a Screenwriter.
Après la réalisation de plusieurs documentaires biographiques, il dirige en 1999 Un jour en septembre relatif à la prise d'otages et le meurtre de 11 athlètes israéliens lors des Jeux olympiques d'été de 1972 à Munich. L'un des mérites de Kevin Macdonald est d'avoir obtenu, entre autres, le témoignage de Zvi Zamir, l'ancien directeur général du Mossad, de Manfred Schreiber l'ancien chef de la police munichoise et, tout particulièrement, de Jamal Al-Gashey, le seul palestinien survivant de cet événement, caché en Afrique et dont l'entretien est sans doute la caractéristique la plus frappante du film.
Ce film documentaire, dont les commentaires sont dits par Michael Douglas, obtient l'Oscar du meilleur film documentaire en 2000.
En 2003, son film La Mort suspendue (Touching the Void) relate l'histoire vraie et dramatique de l'ascension de la face ouest du Siula Grande, en 1985, par les deux alpinistes britanniques Joe Simpson et Simon Yates. En 2004, le film remporte le Alexander Korda Award du meilleur film britannique de la BAFTA et, coïncidence, Alexander Korda a offert son premier emploi au grand-père de Kevin Macdonald, lors de son arrivée en Angleterre en 1935.
Kevin Macdonald fut ensuite engagé par Universal Pictures pour la réalisation de Jeux de pouvoir (State of Play), une version cinéma de la mini-série éponyme de la BBC, avec Russell Crowe et Ben Affleck.

Kevin Macdonald est le petit-fils du réalisateur, scénariste et producteur hongro-britannique Emeric Pressburger et le frère de Andrew Macdonald, producteur, notamment, de Petits meurtres entre amis, Trainspotting, Une vie moins ordinaire.Il suit sa scolarité au Glenalmond College , situé près de Perth.

Daisy, a neurotic and anorexic American teenager, is sent to the English countryside for the summer to stay with her Aunt Penn and her cousins, Eddie, Isaac, and Piper. Ce projet inédit a été tourné en un jour, le 24 juillet 2010, par des internautes du monde entier et consistait à filmer un moment de leur vie afin de décrire la vie des hommes en 2010. Les utilisateurs ont dû dire ce qu'ils avaient dans leurs poches/dans leur sac, ce qu'ils aiment et ce qui leur fait peur. Les vidéos les plus intéressantes et les plus originales ont par la suite été incluses au documentaire qui rassemble plus de 1000 clips vidéos. One night, a thief fleeing through Georgetown in Washington, D.C., is shot by a man carrying a briefcase. A pizza delivery man who witnesses the incident is also shot by the killer and is left in a coma. The following morning, a young woman is killed by a Washington Metro train in what seems to be suicide. Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck) is distraught to hear that the woman was Sonia Baker (Maria Thayer), a lead researcher on his staff. Collins, who has military experience, is leading an investigation into PointCorp, a private defense contractor with controversial operations involving mercenaries. Collins tells his former college roommate and old friend Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe), an investigative reporter, that he had been having an affair with Sonia and that she had sent him a cheerful video message on the morning of her death, which he says is inconsistent and unusual behavior for someone about to commit suicide.

Both climbers successfully reach the summit of the previously unclimbed West Face of Siula Grande in Peru. Joe is injured during the descent after falling, resulting in a badly broken leg. The pair decide to lower Joe with the help of ropes on the steep snowy slope, while an enormous storm rages on. Simon cannot see where he is lowering Joe and Joe eventually drops off a cliff and is suspended by the rope in mid-air. Simon arrests his fall, but neither sees the predicament his partner is in nor hears him, due to the severity of the storm.
