"Harry Caine" is a blind writer who shares his life with his agent Judit and her adult son, Diego. Slowly, events in the present begin to bring back memories of the past. Harry hears that millionaire Ernesto Martel has died; a young filmmaker, Ray X, appears and turns out to be Martel's son, Ernesto, Jr. After Diego is hospitalized for an accidental drug overdose in a Madrid nightclub, Harry collects Diego from the hospital and looks after him to avoid worrying his traveling mother. The film plot takes its starting point from the French play The Human Voice (La Voix humaine, 1930) by Jean Cocteau where a desperate woman tries to avoid being dumped by her lover through a series of phone calls. In the film TV actress Pepa Marcos (Carmen Maura) is depressed and taking sleeping pills because her boyfriend Iván (Fernando Guillén) has just left her. Both she and Iván work as voice-over actors who dub foreign films, notably Johnny Guitar with Joan Crawford and Sterling Hayden. The voice he uses to sweet-talk her (and many other women) is the same one he uses in his work. He is about to leave on a trip and has asked Pepa to pack his things in a suitcase that he will pick up later.

Pepi cultive de la marijuana sur son balcon. Un flic qui habite en face, le remarque et vient chez elle pour le lui reprocher. Son regard est concupiscent si bien qu'elle soulève sa robe et lui propose de faire l'amour en échange de son silence. Le flic accepte. Elle lui précise toutefois qu'il doit passer par «derrière», ne voulant pas perdre sa virginité, qu'elle voulait monnayer pour 60 000 ptas, comme on l'apprendra plus tard. Le policier refuse et la pénètre. Il réalise en entendant ses cris que Pepi était réellement vierge. Celle-ci décide alors de se venger de ce viol avec l'aide de Bom et son groupe de musiciens, mais aussi celle de Luci, la femme masoschiste, mais abandonnée, du policier «qui la traite comme sa mère».
