Ladislaus Vajda (18 August 1877 – 10 March 1933) was a Hungarian screenwriter. He wrote for 40 films in Hungary, Austria and Germany between 1916 and 1932. He was born in Eger, Northern Hungary and died in Berlin, Germany. He was the father of Hungarian film director Ladislao Vajda.

France 1918. In the last months of World War I, four infantrymen—Bayer, a young man known as 'the student' (Der Student), Karl and the lieutenant—spend a few rest-days behind the Front. Here, the student falls in love with the French peasant girl Yvette. Back at the Front, the four suffer again the everyday hardships of war, dirt trenches and danger of death. Bayer, Karl and the lieutenant become trapped when part of the trench collapses in, and the student digs them out. Later they are mistakenly fired upon by their own artillery due to a misjudgement of distance, and again they are saved by the student, who as a messenger risked his life to relay instructions to the soldiers setting the firing range of the artillery.

Dr. Johannes Krafft (Gustav Diessl) and his bride Maria are spending their honeymoon mountain climbing in the Bernina Alps in southeast Switzerland. While climbing the north face of Piz Palü in the strong föhn winds, the loving couple's guide Christian (Christian Klucker) warns Krafft not to be cocky in this dangerous environment, but the doctor dismisses the warning. Just then a violent avalanche descends on the couple, the safety rope breaks, and Maria is swept down into a deep crevice in the Piz Palü glacier. Despite his wife's initial cries for help, Krafft is unable to reach her in her icy grave. Krafft spends the next years wandering the mountain alone like a ghost, looking for the body of his lost bride.

Heli Brandt vit à l'extrême est de l'Allemagne, en Prusse orientale, près de la frontière russe. Elle passe sa vie dans une ferme. Son père est mort depuis longtemps et sa mère s'est mariée une seconde fois. Mais le nouveau mari est autoritaire et mène brutalement sa nouvelle famille. Lors d'une dispute entre le beau-père et le frère Olaf, Heli s'interpose. Elle attrape une hache et la jette sur son beau-père. Celui-ci meurt. Heli va à Berlin, mais comme l'enquête criminelle locale la met en cause, elle s'enfuit à Londres. Un ami lui donne une nouvelle identité. Avec les papiers d'une Russe récemment décédée, Heli veut construire une nouvelle vie ici. Elle rencontre le jeune Russe Boris Berischeff avec qui elle se lie d'amitié. Boris fait rencontrer Heli à l'artiste Sam. Heli, Sam et Boris se déplacent à travers Londres en tant qu'artistes de rue, dans l'espoir de gagner quelques pennies de cette façon.

Jeanne (Edith Jehanne) is the daughter of Alfred Ney, a French diplomat and political observer. The family is based in Russia during the post-revolutionary civil war. Her father is set up by the scheming Khalibiev, who sells him a list of Bolshevik agents that includes Jeanne's lover, Andreas Labov (Uno Henning). The information is leaked by Alfred's Chinese servant, though Khalibiev isn't implicated. With the revolutionary army about to storm the city, Andreas is forced to execute Jeanne's father. She is horrified, but urges Andreas to run for his life. He warns her that it is she who must run, as the Red Army will soon occupy the town. She escapes with the help of a homely soldier, who's become smitten with her.
