En Franconie, en Allemagne, une petite fille du nom de Sina Kolb, 8 ans, a disparu. Le commissaire Altendorf, aujourd'hui en retraite, a été chargé de l'enquête avant d'en être dessaisi. Son successeur, le commissaire Michel, a fait arrêter Emmanuel "Ecco" Stock, un malade mental qui a avoué le meurtre de la fillette, puis s'est rétracté. Finalement, bien qu'aucune preuve n'ait pu être retenue contre lui, il a été condamné à la détention à vie dans un service psychiatrique fermé. L'ancien commissaire en est encore révolté. À l'occasion d'une excursion dans la région du drame, il fait la connaissance du jeune commissaire Niklas Tanner. Celui-ci enquête sur un crime récent. Athanase, chef d'un groupe de contre-espionnage ultra secret, « Le Hangar », se voit confier la mission d'exécuter Birgitt Haas, une ex-terroriste allemande. Tom Ripley (Dennis Hopper) is a wealthy American living in Hamburg, Germany. He is involved in an artwork forgery scheme, in which he appears at auctions to bid on forged paintings produced by an accomplice, artificially driving up the price. At one of these auctions, he is introduced to Jonathan Zimmermann (Bruno Ganz), a picture framer who is dying of a rare and unspecified blood disease. The film is about a projection-equipment repair mechanic named Bruno Winter (Rüdiger Vogler) and a depressed hitchhiker Robert Lander (Hanns Zischler) who has just been through a break-up with his wife and a half-hearted suicide attempt. German writer Philip Winter has missed his publisher's deadline for writing an article about the United States. He decides to return to Germany, and encounters a German woman, Lisa, and her daughter, Alice, who are both doing the same thing. After Lisa leaves Alice temporarily in Phil's care, it quickly becomes apparent that he will have to look after her for longer than he expected. Phil finds himself stuck with Alice, searching various cities of Germany for her grandmother, whose name and address Alice cannot remember. The only clue they have is a photograph of her grandmother's front door with no house number and no one in the shot.
