Lothar Warneke (15 September 1936 – 5 June 2005) was a German film director, screenwriter and actor. His 1977 film The Incorrigible Barbara was entered into the 10th Moscow International Film Festival. His 1981 film Our Short Life was entered into the 12th Moscow International Film Festival.
In 1986 his film Blonder Tango won both the Grand Prix and the Findling Award of the 4th National Feature Film Festival of the GDR. In 1988 he again won the Findling Award, this time for his Einer trage des anderen Last. His 1988 film Bear Ye One Another's Burden was entered into the 38th Berlin International Film Festival, where co-stars Manfred Möck and Jörg Pose won the Silver Bear for Best Actor.
Après une comédie policière parodique (Mit mir nicht, Madam !), Lothar Warneke adopte un ton plus personnel avec Dr. Med. Sommer II, en 1970. Ce film, qui aborde la profession médicale de façon très réaliste, rencontre le succès en RDA et marque le début d'une nouvelle manière du jeune cinéma est-allemand. Cette approche documentaire, au plus près du quotidien (Alltagsfilme), avec des personnages qui doutent, rompt avec les précédents modèles, trop idéologisés et éloignés de la vie des spectateurs.
Dans les années 1970, Lothar Warneke poursuit dans cette voie en traitant notamment le thème de l'articulation entre vie professionnelle et vie privée (Leben mit Uwe, Unser kürzes Leben). Cette façon de mettre en scène des personnages très proches de la vie réelle culmine en 1981 avec le très dépouillé Die Beunruhigung : une femme proche de la quarantaine fait le bilan de sa vie, la veille d'une opération pour un cancer du sein.
Dans la deuxième moitié des années 1980, le réalisateur se distingue encore par deux films. Blonder Tango évoque les difficultés et l'isolement d'un réfugié chilien en RDA : afin de rassurer sa famille, il envoie des lettres mensongères. Enfin, avec Einer Trage des anderen Last, Warneke revient en quelque sorte à ses engouements de jeunesse. Dans un sanatorium, dans les années 1950, un officier marxiste de la Volkspolizei partage la chambre d'un vicaire évangélique. Ce compagnonnage forcé donne lieu à des débats philosophiques et politiques. En 1988, au début des mouvements de contestation, le film apparaît comme un plaidoyer pour le dialogue entre l'État et l'Église, alors seule force d'opposition légale.

Biography
Après l'obtention de son baccalauréat, Lothar Warneke effectue à la fin des années 1950 des études de théologie à l'Université de Leipzig. Mais il abandonne le vicariat dès 1960 pour étudier la mise en scène à l'École de cinéma de Babelsberg, à Potsdam. Dans les années suivantes, il est assistant pour des réalisateurs comme Kurt Maetzig ou Egon Günther. Ingrid "Sunny" Sommer is a singer for an East German band, called the Tornadoes, whose audience is usually senior citizens. For Sunny, performing as a solo pop singer is her dream but singing the same song over and over to a small crowd has not gotten her there yet. When the saxophone player of the band is injured, the musician and philosopher Ralph steps in to substitute for him. Sunny falls for Ralph’s saxophone skills, and soon they become lovers. Sunny asks Ralph to write her a song, and eventually he agrees. After walking off the stage before a performance, Sunny is soon replaced in the band by a new girl. Sunny turns to Ralph for comfort and finds him cheating on her. Finally Sunny has a chance to sing solo on stage with the song Ralph wrote for her, but she does not feel the love that she desires from the audience and gives up. After mixing sleeping pills and alcohol Sunny ends up in a hospital where she stays for rehabilitation. Once Sunny gets back on her feet she goes back to her old factory job, but she quits shortly after starting. The film ends with Sunny being accepted as a singer for another band with a sound different from the Tornadoes.

Nineteen-year-old Maria Morzeck dreams of studying Slavistics, but her hopes are shattered when her brother, Dieter, is sent to prison after being convicted of sedition against the state. She cannot enter college, and becomes a waitress. Maria meets and falls in love with Paul Deisler, an older, married man who turns out to be the judge who convicted her brother. Their affair ends when Deisler is exposed as hypocritical and corrupt. After Dieter's release, he learns of his sister's relationship with the judge and assaults her. Eventually, Maria distances herself from both of them, and decides to pursue her forgotten dream.
