Mamoru Oshii (押井 守 Oshii Mamoru; born August 8, 1951 in Tokyo) is a Japanese filmmaker, television director, and writer. Famous for his philosophy-oriented storytelling, Oshii has directed a number of popular anime, including Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer, Ghost in the Shell, and Patlabor 2: The Movie. He also holds the distinction of having created the first ever OVA, Dallos. For his work, Oshii has received and been nominated for numerous awards, including the Palme d'Or and Golden Lion. He has also attracted praise from international directors such as James Cameron and The Wachowskis.
Currently, Oshii lives in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan with his dog – a mutt named Daniel.

In the aftermath of global thermonuclear war, three battle tested women wage war in a virtual reality videogame against giant mutant sandwhales. All of them seek to kill "Madara Sunakujira" the game's end boss but find that despite their high levels, are unable to engage it alone as they wish, forcing them to form a party to defeat it together. "Gray," a sniper who travels flying in her own plane, "Lucifer," a black dress wearing girl who can turn into a giant crow and uses magic spells, "Colonel," a woman in burgundy armor who uses an FN FAL with M203, and "Jäger," a drifter who uses a powerful sniper rifle and relies on his luck (despite the Game Master telling him his luck stat is very low). The four defeat Madara, but unfortunately for Jäger, only the first person to turn in the quest gets the points, all the girls having flying transports while he's left on foot. In anger Jäger shoots them all down and declares himself a "player killer", and all of them engage in a fire fight.

The Sky Crawlers is set in an alternative history timeline where although the world is at peace, in order to ease the tension of a populace accustomed to war and aggression, private corporations contract fighter pilots to engage in actual combat operations against each other. The film introduces a mystery involving characters called Kildren (キルドレ, Kirudore , "kill-dolls") - humanoids genetically engineered in a way that enables to live eternally in adolescence.

A fictional documentary about changing Japanese eating habits and the colorful thieves that swindle the restaurants which serve them. In an alternate universe, people are addicted to an illegal simulation video game called Avalon. Despite its popularity, the game can leave a player catatonic. One player in the game, Ash (Małgorzata Foremniak), is a very skilled warrior that plays solo in her missions. After completing one of her missions, Ash cashes in her winnings for ammo and currency, whereas the Game Master (Władysław Kowalski) tells her that playing alone is more dangerous on the next level, and he wants her to consider joining a party.
