It focuses on casting pioneer Marion Dougherty, an iconoclast whose exquisite taste, tenacity and gut instincts brought a new kind of actor to the screen that would mark the end of the old studio system and help to usher in this revolutionary new period. In a filthy kitchen of an underground abortionist, an unkempt former medical doctor puts on surgical gloves and quickly downs a full glass of cheap whiskey. Face down on the kitchen table is a barely conscious Porter (Mel Gibson), severely wounded with two large bullet wounds in his back. The doctor pours whiskey on Porter's back to sterilize the area and digs out the bullets. Porter spends five months recuperating. Set amidst Chicago's swing music revival of the late 1990s, Oscar Novak (Perry), an aspiring architect and his business partner, Peter Steinberg (Platt), have just landed a career-making opportunity with a Chicago tycoon Charles Newman (McDermott) who has chosen them to compete for the design of a multimillion dollar cultural center. In a ploy for publicity, Newman has pitched Oscar and Peter in a neck-and-neck competition with their archrivals and former colleagues, the hugely successful (and equally ruthless) Decker and Strauss. In a comic twist Oscar is mistaken for a gay man when meeting with Charles Newman (made even more humorous by the fact that Peter is genuinely gay, with Oscar's comments leading Newman to think that Peter's the straight one). Under the mistaken impression that Oscar is homosexual, and therefore a safe companion for his girlfriend Amy (Campbell), he asks Oscar to keep an eye on her for him and make sure that she doesn't talk to his wife. Oscar falls for Amy virtually on sight, but she thinks he's gay. He is forced to maintain the charade to avoid getting into trouble with Newman, and losing the commission.

Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) is pregnant with LAPD sergeant Martin Riggs' baby; they are not married, but both are thinking about it. Police sergeant Roger Murtaugh's daughter Rianne (Tracie Wolfe), is also pregnant, and Riggs later learns from Lorna that Rianne has secretly married Lee Butters (Chris Rock), a young detective who works at the same station as Murtaugh and Riggs – secretly because Roger had made it clear that he does not want his daughter to marry a police officer. Due to the many disasters caused by both sergeants while on duty, the police department has lost its insurance carrier, and cannot get a new one while they're still out on the streets. Trevor Garfield is an African American high school science teacher at Roosevelt Whitney High School, a high school in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Dennis Broadway, a gangster student to whom he had given a failing grade threatens to murder him, writing the number 187 (the California police code for homicide used in many popular rap lyrics) on every page of one of Garfield's textbooks. Anna Karenina is a young and elegant wife of Alexei Karenin, a wealthy nobleman twenty years her senior. She is unhappy and lives only for their son, Seriozha. A married white woman, Fanny Taylor, claims to have been beaten and raped by a black man. The movie shows a white man, not Fanny’s husband, in her bedroom where they have sex. They have an argument and strike each other. Some black workers outside heard what was happening but did not think they should intervene in white people's business. The white residents readily believe Fanny's claim. Hearing of an escaped black convict, a posse and other unaffiliated white men from Sumner and nearby towns go to Rosewood to investigate. William Foster is recently divorced, and his ex-wife Beth has a restraining order to keep him away from her and their child, Adele. In addition, he was recently laid off from his job due to the early 90s recession. His frustration grows when his car air conditioning fails while he is stuck in traffic. He abandons his car and walks across Los Angeles to attend Adele's birthday party. At a convenience store, Foster becomes frustrated when the Korean owner refuses to give him change for a phone call. Foster disarms the owner and uses his bat to destroy merchandise before paying for a coke and leaving. Shortly thereafter, two gang members accost him with a knife.
