Mary Jane Blige (/ˈblaɪʒ/; born January 11, 1971) is an American singer, songwriter, model, record producer and actress. Starting her career as a background singer on Uptown Records in 1989, Blige released her first album, What's the 411?, in 1992, and has released 11 studio albums since and made over 150 guest appearances on other albums and soundtracks.

A recipient of nine Grammy Awards, in addition to receiving a record of thirty Grammy nominations, Blige is one of few entertainers in history to have eight or more albums to reach multi-platinum status. My Life, in particular, is considered among the greatest albums ever recorded according to Rolling Stone, Time, and Vibe. For her part in combining hip-hop and soul in the early-1990s and its subsequent commercial success, Blige received the Legends Award at the World Music Awards. Blige also received the Voice of Music Award from performance rights organization ASCAP, with its official Jeanie Weems stating that "[Blige's] music has been the voice of inspiration to women worldwide in both struggle and triumph." Blige made Time magazine's "Time 100" list of influential individuals around the world in 2007.

As of 2013, Blige has sold more than 50 million albums and 25 million singles worldwide. Billboard ranked Blige as the most successful female R&B artist of the past 25 years. The magazine also lists her 2006 song "Be Without You" as the top R&B song of the 2000s, as it spent an unparalleled 15 weeks atop the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. In 2011, VH1 ranked Blige as the 80th greatest artist of all time. Moreover, she is ranked number 100 on the list of "100 greatest singers of all time" by Rolling Stone magazine. In 2012, VH1 ranked Blige at number 9 in "The 100 Greatest Women in Music."

Blige also earned high remarks for her work in film. She starred in the 2009 Tyler Perry box-office hit I Can Do Bad All By Myself and played a role in the film Rock of Ages (2012). She received a Golden Globe Award nomination for her musical contribution to the film The Help. In partnership with the Home Shopping Network (HSN) and Carol's Daughter, Blige released her "My Life" perfume. The perfume broke HSN records by selling 65,000 bottles during its premiere. The scent went on to win two FiFi Awards, including the "Fragrance Sales Breakthrough" award.

Née le 11 janvier 1971, d'un père musicien de jazz et d'une mère infirmière, Mary Jane est en contact avec la musique dès son plus jeune âge. Mais, Thomas, son père, quitte le foyer familial alors qu'elle n'est âgée que de 4 ans, les abandonnant, sa sœur aînée LaTonya et elle-même, à leur mère, Cora, qui les élèvera toute seule. Mary Jane révèlera dans The Oprah Winfrey Show, le 1er février 2006, qu'elle a été abusée sexuellement pendant son enfance par un ami de la famille. Quelques années plus tard, la famille de Mary Jane quitte New York pour la banlieue de Yonkers, où elle vit dans un des HLM les plus dangereux de la cité. Mary Jane se réfugie alors dans la musique : elle est la chanteuse principale dans la chorale de l'église qu'elle fréquente et, à 7 ans, gagne un concours de chanson en interprétant Respect d'Aretha Franklin.
Elle a un frère cadet, Bruce Miller (qui est lui l'auteur des paroles de plusieurs chansons dans l'album intitulé No More Drama) et une autre sœur, Jonquell, en plus de sa sœur aînée LaTonya Blige-DaCosta (qui danse avec elle dans le clip du tube mondial Family Affair) évoquée plus haut.

Mary J. a eu une relation pendant six ans (1991–1997) avec Cedric Hailey, alias K-Ci, chanteur principal de Jodeci, groupe-phare de la scène RnB américaine dans les années 1990.
En 2006, la mère de la fille de Nas, Carmen Bryan, a déclaré que le rappeur emblématique de Queensbridge, dans le quartier du Queens (New York), a eu une liaison sentimentale avec Mary J. autour de 1997 et 1998.

Elle a également été en couple avec le crooner RnB Case. La raison pour laquelle le couple se serait séparé, d'après les rumeurs, serait que Case avait l'impression de gérer les problèmes de Mary J. Blige issus de sa relation précédente avec K-Ci (désormais moitié du duo pop-RnB K-Ci & JoJo).

C'est en 2000 que débutent les amours de Mary J. avec Martin Kendu Isaacs, plus connu sous son deuxième prénom, Kendu, dans l'industrie musicale dans laquelle il officie comme cadre administratif. Kendu et Mary J. Blige se sont mariés le 7 décembre 2003 au cours d'une petite cérémonie privée au domicile de Mary J. Blige. La nouvelle M Isaacs est désormais la belle-mère des trois enfants que Kendu a eus d'un précédent mariage.
