Maxine Gates (May 3, 1917 – July 27, 1990) was an American actress. She appeared in over 35 films between 1945 and 1972. Due to her rotund figure (reportedly, Gates weighed 250 pounds), Gates was often cast as a love interest who often intimidated her husband or boyfriend. She is best known for her appearances in several 1950s-era Three Stooges films such as Goof on the Roof, Husbands Beware and Muscle Up a Little Closer.
During World War Two, Gates performed in night clubs and stage shows and was acclaimed for her singing and dancing. In the course of these performances, Gates kissed male audience members on the cheek, and kissed 7,000 men in seven months.
After retiring from acting in 1972, Gates ran a self storage business in Van Nuys, California. She died of complications from respiratory disease in Panorama City on July 27, 1990 at the age of 73.

Moe, Larry and Joe are about propose marriage to their sweethearts. But later, the boys discover that Joe's fiancee's ring has been stolen. The Stooges suspect it is Elmo, a muscular bully who works at their plant. The Stooges come face to face with him in the company gym, but when they try to make him give the ring back by physical force, the plan backfires and Moe and Larry are knocked senseless. In the 1890s, young Harry Houdini (Tony Curtis) is performing with a Coney Island carnival as Bruto, the Wild Man, when Bess (Janet Leigh), a naive onlooker, tries to protect him from the blows of Schultz (Sig Ruman), his "trainer." Harry then appears as magician The Great Houdini and, spotting Bess in the audience, invites her on stage. Harry flirts with the unsuspecting Bess during his act, but she flees from him in a panic. When Bess shows up to watch Harry perform two more times, however, he corners her. Bess admits her attraction, and soon after, the two appear at Harry's mother's house, newly married. The story picks up as Frankie Faulkner fails in his attempt to blackmail the district attorney, Joseph Foster, into letting his boss, Hansen, go free from the charges against him. Frankie goes on to recruit young Larry Price, a criminal in the making, to join the boys' club led by Reverend Thomas Garfield, for which Frankie is a sponsor. Joseph is very keen on convicting Hansen for his crimes. He tells the reverend that he literally is prepared to "sell his soul" to get the job done.
