Michel Seydoux (born 11 September 1947) is a French businessman and film producer. He also serves as the president and chairman of French club Lille OSC. Seydoux is the grandson of scientist Marcel Schlumberger and has two brothers; Jérôme and Nicolas. Jérôme is a shareholder on football club Olympique Lyonnais. In 1997 he was a member of the jury at the 20th Moscow International Film Festival.

Au début des années 1970, après les succès en Europe des films El Topo et La Montagne sacrée, le producteur français Michel Seydoux propose au réalisateur Alejandro Jodorowsky de produire son prochain film, lui laissant carte blanche. Jodorowsky se lance alors dans son projet le plus ambitieux : l'adaptation du roman Dune de Frank Herbert, qu'il n'a pas lu au départ, donnant par hasard le nom de cette œuvre à Seydoux car il en a entendu du bien par un ami. Mais, stimulé par le roman, il souhaite en faire une expérience spirituelle qui changera la vision des spectateurs, ce projet devenant pour lui un idéal mystique et conceptuel, du fait notamment de la présence dans le roman de l'épice, qu'il relie avec les excès de son époque (utilisation du LSD par les hippies, etc.).

Louise, jeune veuve arboricultrice de la Drôme en difficultés financières, heurte dans un accident de voiture un homme qui marche sur un chemin de terre. Étrange personnage filiforme, dégingandé et rigide dans son immuable costume, au franc-parler et au débit vocal rapide et mécanique, il refuse d'être soigné et ne supporte pas qu'on le touche. Louise découvre peu à peu que Pierre est un autiste Asperger plein de tics et d'angoisses, mais également un redoutable observateur et calculateur prodige qui analyse tout à l'aide de son ordinateur. Pierre s'adapte très vite à Louise et à son environnement, et s'installe chez elle contre son gré. Tout d'abord perplexes, les deux enfants de Louise s'attachent à lui et font tout pour que le jeune homme reste à la maison. Louise est bouleversée quand elle apprend que son nouveau colocataire est menacé d'internement psychiatrique suite à des démélés judiciaires. Par ailleurs, ses compétences scientifiques et techniques la sauvent à plusieurs reprises de la ruine. Elle hésite longuement à l'accepter dans sa vie.

Young Alejandro (Jeremías Herskovits) lives with his Jewish-Ukrainian parents Jaime (Brontis Jodorowsky) and Sara (Pamela Flores) in Tocopilla, Chile. Jaime is a communist who worships Stalin and raises his son with great severity. He plans to assassinate the right-wing president Carlos Ibáñez del Campo (Bastian Bodenhofer). To get close to Ibáñez, Jaime gets a job as groom to the president's beloved horse Bucephalus. But when Jaime has Ibáñez at gunpoint, his hands become paralysed. Jaime begins a long journey, is captured by Nazis and tortured. Rebels free Jaime and return him to his family in Tocopilla. Jaime's hands are healed when Sara tells him "You found in Ibáñez all you admired in Stalin. You are the same as they are! You have lived in the guise of a tyrant." Alejandro, Jaime, and Sara board a ship and leave Tocopilla.

Jane Callahan (Julia Ormond), a beautiful American lady, writes to her son, a cadet at a famous military academy, about a long kept secret. Twenty years ago she arrived in Russia to assist Douglas McCracken (Richard Harris), an obsessive engineer who needs the Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich's patronage to sponsor his invention, a massive machine to harvest the forests. On her travels, she meets two men who would change her life forever: a handsome young cadet Andrej Tolstoy (Oleg Menshikov) with whom she shares a fondness for opera, and the powerful General Radlov who is entranced by her beauty and wants to marry her. Tolstoy and Radlov, much to the surprise and indignation of the latter, become rivals for Jane's love. She confides a deep secret to Tolstoy, promises to marry him, and together they spend a passionate night of love. But later he overhears Jane denying her interest in him to the General, in order to win the general's favour and be granted an audience with the Grand Duke. Distraught, Tolstoy attacks the General who arrests his young rival on false charges and banishes him to Siberia to seven years of hard labor and five years of isolation.

The Soviet Union, summer 1936. Comdiv Sergei Petrovich Kotov, his wife Maroussia (Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė), and their young daughter Nadia are relaxing in a banya, when they are suddenly interrupted. "Smoking" and "No Smoking" are two segments of the film which are based on closely connected plays. The original plays covered eight separate stories, which have been pared down to three each for these movies. At a certain point in the story of each segment, the five female characters (all played by Sabine Azema) and the four male characters (all played by Pierre Arditi) have their lives skillfully recapped in terms of "what might have happened" if they had made or failed to make certain choices. For example, "No Smoking" focuses chiefly on the relationship between the mild-mannered Miles Coombes and his infinitely more aggressive and ambitious wife, Rowena.
