Dewey Finn is a guitarist and member of the rock band No Vacancy. However, he is unanimously voted out of the band due to his onstage antics. Dewey shares an apartment with his friend Ned Schneebly, a former rocker now substitute teacher, and his bossy girlfriend Patty Di Marco, who threatens to kick him out unless he pays his overdue rent. One day, Dewey answers a phone call from Principal Rosaline Mullins of the prestigious Horace Green prep school, inquiring for Ned about a short-term position as a substitute.
