Mohammed Diab (en arabe : محمد دياب) est un réalisateur, scénariste et écrivain égyptien dont le travail est principalement centré sur les évolutions de la société égyptienne. Il est surtout connu pour son film Les Femmes du bus 678 qui traite du harcèlement sexuel des femmes dans la ville du Caire. Il est également connu pour avoir participé à l'écriture du scénario du film El Gezeira (The island).

Biography

Après des études commerciales, il travaille deux ans dans une banque américaine. Puis il décide de s'orienter délibérément vers le cinéma, et reprend des études à la New York Film Academy. Il intervient ensuite comme scénariste et participe à ce titre à l'écriture de plusieurs films qui rencontrent le succès, dont El Gezira (The Island) considérée l'un des plus grands succès commerciaux du cinéma égyptien.

Pour son premier long métrage comme réalisateur, il s’est inspiré d’un fait de société réel, datant de 2008 : le premier procès intenté par une femme en Égypte pour harcèlement sexuel. Son deuxième long-métrage, Clash (Eshtebak), aborde le sujet de l'intégrisme musulman dans un thriller, et a été présenté au festival du film de Cannes, en sélection officielle, en ouverture de la catégorie Un certain regard.

The film revolves around Ahmed Galal (a shrewd observer would also detect that this is also the director’s name), an irresponsible, egotistical accountant working in a stock-trading company. At the beginning of the film, he is portrayed as a man who has no limits; a man who can fire employees just to maximize profits and who deals with his family with such carelessness that he is entirely out of touch with what is happening in their lives. The events of the film take place on Ahmed’s wedding day, which goes horribly wrong. He wakes up to experience the usual domestic routine: His father shouting at him to get out of the bathroom, his mother complaining of the work load, and his customary bickering with his sister. In the street, he witnesses a burglary but doesn’t bother to stop the thief. On his way back from work, he finds himself wrongly accused of a hit-and-run he didn’t commit. The onlookers persuade him into taking the victim to the hospital. After going to the police station, he finds that his car has been seized by the authorities. The climax is when, crossing the street, a huge truck hits him and he dies.

A film about a community of Upper Egypt residents living in El Gezira (the Island). They have their own set of rules, ethics and traditions. But they also plant drugs and buy arms from Sudan. The officer in charge of the region turns a blind eye to these happenings, and in the beginning, the government takes no heed of the Island. At the start of the film, we witness the death of the old 'Kabir el Gezira' (the island's ruler), leaving the land to his son Mansour. The first half follows Mansour as he takes control of his land and must deal with a band of other drug lords who are greedy to take control of the island. The second half of the film deals with the political conflict.
