Monte Hellman (born July 12, 1932, in New York City) is an American film director, producer, and film editor.

Biography
Son film le plus apprécié par la critique est le road movie Macadam à deux voies (Two-Lane Blacktop, en 1971), qui est cependant un échec commercial, mais qui est depuis devenu un film culte. Monte Hellman avait débuté quelques années auparavant sous la direction de Roger Corman, producteur de série B qui a également fait débuter Scorsese et Coppola, en réalisant une parodie de film d'horreur, Beast from Haunted Cave, en 1959.Deux autres films d’Hellman sont devenus des films culte, les westerns « bressoniens » L'Ouragan de la vengeance (Ride in the Whirlwind) et The Shooting, tous deux interprétés et coproduits par Jack Nicholson. After being shot down by police at the end of the previous film, the infamous Santa Claus Killer Richard "Ricky" Caldwell has been left comatose for six years, with a transparent dome being affixed to his head by the doctors in order to repair his damaged skull. Wanting to contact Ricky, the eccentric Dr. Newbury begins using a blind clairvoyant girl named Laura Anderson to try reach out to him. One Christmas Eve, after a particularly traumatic session with Newbury, Laura begins to regret her participation in his experiment, but Newbury tries to convince her to keep trying, saying that they can talk more after Laura returns home from visiting her grandmother over the holiday. After Laura is picked up from the hospital by her older brother Chris, a drunk hospital employee dressed as Santa Claus wanders into Ricky's room and begins taunting him, rousing Ricky back to consciousness. Killing the Santa impersonator Ricky escapes from the hospital, taking a letter opener with him after killing a receptionist as well.

Willet Gashade (Oates), a former bounty hunter, returns to his small mining camp after a lengthy absence and finds his slow-witted friend Coley (Will Hutchins) in a state of fear. Coley explains to Gashade that their partner, Leland Drum (B. J. Merholz), had been shot to death two days before by an unseen assassin. The killing was possibly committed in revenge for the accidental trampling death of "a little person" in town, which may have been caused by Gashade's brother, Coin. Coin had inexplicably rushed away from their camp moments before the shooting death. Gashade and Coley become increasingly paranoid, and Gashade takes his friend's gun away from him.
