Débutant comme directeur de la photographie, il s'impose comme réalisateur en 2005 en mettant en scène Banlieue 13, produit par Luc Besson. Le film remporte un succès commercial et connaît en 2009 une suite, Banlieue 13 ultimatum, réalisée par Patrick Alessandrin.
En 2008, Pierre Morel revient avec Taken toujours produit par Luc Besson avec Liam Neeson. Le film raconte l'histoire d'un père qui a 4 jours pour retrouver sa fille enlevée à Paris. C'est le film français qui a rapporté le plus d'argent en Amérique : 145 000 989 $. Une suite est prévue mais elle sera réalisée par Olivier Megaton également réalisateur du film Le Transporteur 3.
En 2010, il réalise From Paris with Love avec John Travolta et Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. Basé sur une histoire structurée autour du terrorisme, le film ne connaîtra pas le même succès que Taken.
En 2015, il réalise Gunman avec Sean Penn et Javier Bardem. Il s'agit d'une adaptation du roman de Jean-Patrick Manchette, La Position du tireur couché.

Biography
Pierre Morel a étudié le cinéma à l'École supérieure de réalisation audiovisuelle (ESRA), une école supérieure technique privée de Paris.Débutant comme directeur de la photographie, il s'impose comme réalisateur en 2005 en mettant en scène Banlieue 13, produit par Luc Besson. Le film remporte un succès commercial et connaît en 2009 une suite, Banlieue 13 ultimatum, réalisée par Patrick Alessandrin.

Jim Terrier (Sean Penn) is a former special forces soldier who, in his 50s, has become a black-op mercenary. He is part of a team deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2006, under the cover of providing security to local projects. He falls in love with Annie, a fellow expat working as a doctor in a local hospital. During this period, even though civil war has wracked the country, large multinational mining companies continue to profit from the country's mining industry. After the Minister of Mining announces his plans to declare contracts with the mining companies unjust and renegotiate the terms, the mining companies hire Jim's team to assassinate the Minister, to ensure their access to the rich mineral resources. Jim delivers the fatal shot from a sniper rifle and flees from Africa, leaving Annie behind. After that, Jim retires from his mercenary career.

In 2010, social problems have overrun the poorer suburbs of Paris; especially Banlieue 13, commonly referred to as B13: a ghetto with a population of some two million. Unable to control B13, the authorities construct a high wall topped by barbed tape around the entire area, forcing the inhabitants within to survive without education, proper utilities or police protection behind the containment wall. Police checkpoints stop anybody going in or out. Three years later, the district has become overrun with gangs. Leïto (David Belle) is a fighter of such gangs. The beginning of the film depicts Leïto washing a case full of drugs down the drain, then escaping the gang who has come to collect the drugs. The gang's leader, Taha, kidnaps Leïto's sister Lola in retaliation; Leïto is able to rescue her and take Taha to the police station, but the police arrest Leïto and let Taha leave with Lola, stating that they're leaving the district.

During a shootout against Chinese Triads at a San Francisco dock warehouse, FBI agents John Crawford (Jason Statham) and Tom Lone (Terry Chen) stumble across the notorious assassin Rogue (Jet Li), a former CIA assassin who now works for the Japanese Yakuza. Frank Martin (Jason Statham) is a highly skilled driver known only as "The Transporter." He will transport anything, no questions asked, always on time, and he is known as the best in the business. In the autumn of 1654, an escaped slave seeks refuge at a convent in southern France. After the nuns take him in, his pursuers break into the convent and assault the nuns, searching for the slave. After wounding the mother superior (Pascale Roberts), they close in on their prey. One feisty novitiate, Eloise (Sophie Marceau)—the daughter of the renowned swordsman D'Artagnan (Philippe Noiret) of the famed Three Musketeers—stands up to the intruders, but is shoved aside as they ride off after the frightened slave, who escaped from the evil Duke Crassac de Merindol. Eloise finds a blood-stained piece of paper (a simple laundry list) that the slave used to stop a bleeding wound, and believes it holds some secret code. Later, Eloise is with the mother superior when she dies from her wound. Swearing a sacred oath to avenge her and dressed in men's clothes, Eloise sets out for Paris to elicit the help of her father in tracking down the murderers.
