During the 1947 partition, the Lahore based family of Rajveer (Rishi Kapoor) and Amrit (Rekha) has to flee Pakistan and settle in Amritsar, Punjab. In the house that they get to stay, Amrit finds an abandoned baby boy of the Muslim family who owned the house but fled to Pakistan because of communal riots. Amrit raises the boy as her own and he grows up to be Ishaan (Luv Sinha). During a summer camp visit to Kashmir, Ishaan falls in love with Chandni (Ferena Wazeir). When he goes to her house to ask her hand in marriage, her father (Deep Dhillon) and uncle (Ahmed Khan) tell him to forget her as they are against her marrying a Sikh boy. When Amrit and Rajveer come to know about this they finally declare the truth to Ishaan that he is a Muslim in reality and not their own child. He doesn't believe them and Chandni's parents refuse to believe it without proof. The old couple then decide to track Ishaan's real parents down and also succeed. Ishaan's real mother, Benazir (Hema Malini) comes down with his real father (Javed Sheikh) to take back custody of a now grown up Ishaan. Chandni's parents immediately agree to the marriage when Ishaan's real parents visit their house. What complications arise when Ishaan's parents start making plans to take back Ishaan and his bride back to Pakistan and how they are handled by the principal characters forms the rest of the plot.

Young Raj Malhotra (Akshay Kumar) lives with his elder brother, Rohit his sister-in-law Kiran, and a niece. After an accident fractures his leg, he is unable to walk for some time. Due to psychological reasons, he cannot walk even after the fracture heals. When the Malhotras move to Dehra Dun, Raj befriends their neighbour, young tomboy Kajal (Lara Dutta), as both share a common passion for aeroplanes. Kajal encourages Raj to walk, and he succeeds. Years later the two continue to be fast friends, and everyone expects them to marry soon. Raj secretly loves Kajal and is waiting for the right time to propose her. However, Kajal sees him only as her best friend. Raj is recruited by the Indian Air Force and goes for training for a year and a half. After his training gets over, he rushes to Kajal to propose her, only to find out that she has given her heart to a multimillionaire, Karan Singhania (Aman Verma). Raj tells Kajal that Karan is the best life partner for her, but does not reveal his true feelings. Kajal and Karan get married and during the reception party, Kajal comes to know about Raj's feeling for her. Hurt by the fact that she did not see his feelings for her despite being Raj's best friend, Kajal asks him to move on in his life as now she is a married woman. Thereafter the Malhotras move to Nainital, and Raj relocates to Cape Town for training.

U.S. based Anjali Thapar (Amrita Rao) has repeated dreams of a parallel life in India, the temple of Devi Maa Durga, & some sword-wielding men on horseback. Badal (Bobby Deol) is a young man with a tragic childhood. Raj (Salman Khan) is a singer trying to make his way in the big city of Mumbai. He rescues a young woman who has fallen in front of a train and stays with her when she is rushed to a hospital. This action-packed movie is about an unflinching former soldier Karan (Sanjay Dutt) who has on the brain the revenge of the death of his upright father who allegedly dies in jail because of a lawyer Ravi Verma (Chandrachur Singh) and his crooked associates, i.e. his father-in-law Singhal (Raj Babbar) & his allies. In a shot of revenge, Karan one day fires at Ravi and his wife Kajal (Mahima Chaudhry) in which Kajal is killed and Ravi is mentally impaired as he loses his memory. As a medication to restore Ravi's memory, a Kajal's lookalike Kajri (Mahima Chaudhry, in a dual role) is engaged by Singhal to represent Kajal, with Ravi under Singhal's stronghold. But an obstinate Karan is ready for a war to the knife to kill Ravi. With the help of Kajri Ravi starts to get back his memory. Suddenly he starts to behave like a good guy and when he comes to know about Karan who is trying to kill him, he pacifies with Karan with the help of kajri and promises Karan that he will prove his father was innocent. Learning this Singhal and his allies try to kill Ravi, Kajri and Karan. In the final fight Karan wins over the baddies and his father is proved innocent.

When Kajal (Sridevi) marries Raaj (Anil Kapoor), an Engineer by profession, she and her dad (Kader Khan), automatically assume that he is rich, wealthy, and corrupt. Kader khan is very happy that his daughter does not have any in-laws, and that she'll get to rule the roost in her new house. But that is not the case. Raaj does not have an air-conditioner, a car, not even a refrigerator. This infuriates Kajal, and in her mind she creates a separate world, where she is rich, wealthy, has several cars, and lives lavishly in a big bungalow. Even the birth of two children (a young son and a little daughter), and several years of marriage, does not change Kajal. An example of this occurs when Kajal meets her old friend Nisha (Poonam Dhillon) who Kajal feeds a pack of lies such that her husband is a business magnate, her family own several cars, live in a big bungalow etc. Nisha who is more wealthy than Kajal then offers to give her a lift home, only for Kajal to have to lie about the directions to her home according to the story she has fabricated. Kajal then realises her mistake when the bungalow she points out as her own turns out to be Nisha's. Nisha explains to Kajal that no matter how much and how little you have, your own house is your own home and that fabricating such stories only adds insult to her husband, family and home. When Janhvi (Urmila Matondkar) Raaj's boss's (Saeed Jaffrey) niece comes from overseas, she meets Raj at the airport and assumes he is the driver. AS she behaves rudely with him, he sends her back home alone, not caring about what his boss would say on that. Jahnvi reaches the office well in time and praises Raj's attitude, but when she learns that he's an engineer working for her uncle's construction company, she apologises to him. Shani uncle introduces her with Vikram Khanna, a handsome young guy, who is his business partner. Vikram observes Jahnvi and likes the young, naturally vivacious girl very much. He almost dreams of marrying her. They both become friends. One day, Vikram and Jahnvi go to sight seeing Jahnvi's guest house, at the new property location. Sahni gets worried as the weather is going from bad to worse but both have not returned till evening. At the other side, as Raj leaves the office to go for the farmhouse, Vikram is seeing asking Jahnvi for marriage casually. But Jahnvi says that she didn't find him special to be her choice. She rejects his advances. Vikram tries to get physical with her but Jahnvi slaps him. Angered at the slap, Vikram throws her down on the bed and forcibly tries to get intimate with her. But Raj arrives in the nick of time and saves Jahnvi. Vikram threatens him with loss of his job but he doesn't care. Jahnvi remembers how earlier Raj had rejected the job n apartment offer from a rival company due to Mr. Sahni's help. She starts liking Raj since the moment and falls in love with him. When she learns that he is a married man whose wife she helped in the electronics store for buying a large music player, she is adamant on getting married to Raj by hook or by crook. After meeting the greedy Kajal inside the city Ganesh temple, Janhvi offers two crore rupees in exchange for marriage to Raaj. And Kajal, seeing this as her opportunity to gain wealth and an easy life, accepts her proposal not knowing that she is making a big mistake and this decision will change her life forever.

Inspector Suryadev Singh (Amrish Puri) is an honest and efficient cop in the city. He has a granddaughter Kajal (Twinkle Khanna), whom he has brought up after her parents were poisoned by his enemies, and whom he values more than his life. But Suryadev’s cousin Vishambar (Suresh Oberoi) is plotting the complete ruin of Suryadev, along with his wife and his brother in law Bhanwari (Shakti Kapoor) because Vishambar’s deceased father gives all his share of property, including a village Sundernagar, to Suryadev as Vishambar has married someone against his wishes. So Vishambar plans to kill Kajal, as then his revenge will be complete, and the property will fall into his hands since there would be no one to inherit it from Suryadev, which his son Nagendra can inherit. For this purpose, Vishambar hires Karan (Ajay Devgan).

Kajal (Karishma Kapoor) is the daughter of Prof. Sidhant Sharma (Alok Nath). Karan (Sanjay Kapoor) and Kajal (Juhi Chawla) are in love and ready to settle down and lead a happy life.
