John Regis Toomey (August 13, 1898 – October 12, 1991) was an American film and television actor.

Biography

Au cinéma, Regis Toomey participe à environ 180 films américains entre 1929 et 1987. Bon nombre de ceux-ci sont bien connus, notamment La Dame du vendredi (1940), avec Rosalind Russell et Cary Grant, et Le Grand Sommeil (1946), avec Lauren Bacall et Humphrey Bogart, tous deux réalisés par Howard Hawks, ou encore L'Homme aux colts d'or (1959), avec Henry Fonda, Richard Widmark et Anthony Quinn, réalisé par Edward Dmytryk.

À la télévision, il apparaît dans de nombreuses séries, ainsi que dans quatre téléfilms, de 1950 à 1982. Mentionnons la première série de L'Homme à la Rolls, où il tient le rôle du détective Les Hart, durant les 64 épisodes des Saisons 1 et 2, de 1963 à 1965.

Jim Cole, his wife Angela, along with their children Charlie and Gypsy, niece May, and friend Sam Potts arrive in a small Wyoming town. Jim had inherited a ranch from his late uncle, and decided to give up his former job as a lawman and become a rancher instead. In town they meet Mr. Benson the banker, who tells them about there is still a $675 mortgage on the property. Jim initially hesitates to take the land title when he learns of this, since it would take nearly all their savings but when told that another rancher Jed Curry wants the land for himself, he relents. Mr. Benson then explains that Jed Curry initially owned the property but lost it to Jim's late uncle in a card game, and wants it back for his sons. Meanwhile, a group of town boys make fun of Charlie, shooting a rock into his back. Determined to get back at them, he fights back and gets into a severe tussle. At Mr. Benson's office, Jim finally agrees to keep the land when Mr. Benson hands him the money/landowner's bill and settles the mortgage. Before they leave, Jim and Angela break up the fight involving Charlie and scold him.

When the Blue Raiders are called into Union service at the start of the American Civil War, their mascot drummer boy, John Clem defies his father’s wishes and smuggles himself on the train carrying the troops to camp. At the Battle of Chickamauga, Johnny wounds a Confederate Colonel who was attacking his friend Gabe Trotter. After the battle, General Ulysses S. Grant promotes Gabe to a lieutenant and Johnny is promoted to sergeant. Johnny and Gabe deliver an important message to General James B. Steedman, but on the way back to Thomas’s headquarters, Gabe is wounded and Johnny is captured. Even though questioned by General Joseph Wheeler he refuses to talk. He makes a daring escape and returns to the union lines.

The new, state of the art nuclear submarine Seaview is on diving trials in the Arctic Ocean. The Seaview is designed and built by scientist and engineering genius Admiral Harriman Nelson (USN-Ret) (Walter Pidgeon). Captain Lee Crane (Robert Sterling) is the Seaview's Commanding Officer. One of the on-board observers is Dr. Susan Hiller (Joan Fontaine), studying crew-related stress. The mission includes being out of radio contact for 96 hours while under the Arctic ice cap, but the ice begins to crack and melt, with boulder-size pieces crashing into the ocean around the submarine. Surfacing, they discover fire burning in the sky. After the rescue of a scientist and his dog at Ice Floe Delta, Miguel Alvarez (Michael Ansara), the sub receives radio contact from Mission Director Inspector Bergan at the Bureau of Marine Exploration. He advises that a meteor shower pierced the Van Allen radiation belt causing it to catch fire, resulting in a world-threatening increase in heat all across the Earth. Nelson's on-board friend and scientist, retired Commodore Lucius Emery (Peter Lorre) concurs that it is possible. Bergan informs Nelson that the President wants him at a UN Emergency Scientific Meeting as soon as possible.
