Renée Adorée (September 30, 1898 – October 5, 1933) was a French actress who appeared in Hollywood silent movies during the 1920s.

Biography

Fille d'artistes de cirque, Renée Adorée participait aux représentations depuis l'âge de cinq ans en compagnie de ses parents. Elle commence très jeune sa carrière d'actrice et se produit avec une troupe en Europe. Lorsque la Première Guerre mondiale éclate elle fuit la Russie, où elle donnait des représentations, pour Londres. Elle part ensuite pour New York où elle est actrice de théâtre, jusqu'à ce que l'opportunité de travailler dans le cinéma se présente.

En 1920, le nom Renée Adorée lui est donné par le studio, et elle apparaît dans son premier film, The Strongest de Raoul Walsh. À la nouvelle année 1920, elle rencontre Tom Moore (1883-1955), de 15 ans son aîné. Tom Moore et ses frères étaient des acteurs à succès d'Hollywood. Six semaines après leur rencontre, Renée Adorée épouse Tom Moore, le 12 février 1921, dans sa maison de Beverly Hills. L'idylle ne dure pas et en 1925 elle se marie une seconde fois avec Sherman Gill.

Malgré sa petite taille, sa sensuelle beauté et ses yeux pénétrants lui confèrent une fascinante présence en noir et blanc. Son plus grand rôle est Mélisande dans le mélodrame The Big Parade en 1925, qui devient l'un des plus grands succès de tous les temps de la MGM et que les historiens considèrent comme un des meilleurs films muets. Ce film, dont la distribution comprenait également John Gilbert, est toujours diffusé à la télévision.

Elle a une brève scène dénudée dans le film L'Infidèle (The Mating Call) en 1928.

Lors de l'avènement du cinéma parlant, Renée Adorée fut l'une des rares actrices dont la voix portait suffisamment pour continuer à jouer. Elle joua avec Lon Chaney et son ancien beau-frère Owen Moore, fit trois autres films avec John Gilbert et tourna dans quatre films avec un autre acteur célèbre : Ramón Novarro. En 1930, elle avait tourné dans quarante-quatre films. On lui diagnostiqua alors une tuberculose et elle fut forcée de quitter les planches.

Elle vécut encore quelques années, et mourut quelques jours après son trente-sixième anniversaire. Elle est inhumée au Hollywood Forever Cemetery, à Hollywood.

Pour ses contributions à l'industrie du film, Renée Adorée a une étoile sur le Hollywood Walk of Fame, 1601 Vine Street.

In Seville, Spain, a cantina is located across the street from San Agustín convent. Several struggling bohemians try to survive in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the winter of 1830, hoping to one day become famous.
