A director by the name of Alan Smithee has been allowed to direct Trio, a big-budget action film starring Sylvester Stallone, Whoopi Goldberg and Jackie Chan. The studio recuts the film, and when Smithee sees the results (which he describes as being "worse than Showgirls"), he wants to disown the film. However, since his name is also the pseudonym used by Hollywood when someone does not want to have their name attached to a bad film, he steals the film and flees, threatening to destroy the film by burning it.

A computer salesman charged with marketing a tiny computer that no one can operate, faces hypertension when he realizes that there is no way to sell the product and he is likely to lose his job. So he can get some rest, his wife offers to take their two kid's camping for a week. When his fellow salesman and best friend is fired and thrown out of his house by his wife, he moves in and immediately starts unending parties, which ultimately ends up the house on fire and Winkler arrested on multiple charges. In between, in a drug-induced stupor, he gets mixed up with a ditzy blonde who wants to marry him, and rescue her child from being raised by her parents.

Stanley Ipkiss is a shy and unlucky bank clerk working at the local Edge City bank. He is frequently picked on by everyone around him like the Bank President's son Mr. Dickey, his ruthless landlady Mrs. Peenman, and the mechanics Irv and Burt Ripley who ripped him off. The only exception of this is his Jack Russell Terrier Milo and his co-worker and best friend Charlie Schumaker. Meanwhile, gangster Dorian Tyrell operates a nightclub called the Coco Bongo while plotting to overthrow his boss Niko.
