Richard Dawson Kiel (September 13, 1939 – September 10, 2014) was an American actor, voice artist, and comedian, best known for his role as Jaws in the James Bond franchise, in which he played the character in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) and Moonraker (1979). James Bond (Agent 007) was played by Roger Moore in both films; he also had cameos in many other James Bond video games, such as GoldenEye (Nintendo 64, 1997). He was known for roles in The Longest Yard (1974), Silver Streak (1976), Force 10 from Navarone (1978), Pale Rider (1985), and as Mr. Larson in Happy Gilmore (1996). In television, he appeared as the Kanamit alien in the classic The Twilight Zone episode "To Serve Man" (1962) and as Dr. Miguelito Loveless' assistant, Voltaire, in first-season episodes of The Wild, Wild West (1965-1966).

Biography

Kiel's height and features were a result of a hormonal condition known as acromegaly. In his prime, Kiel stood 7 feet 1½ inches (217 cm) tall. He noted in his 2002 autobiography Making It Big in the Movies that he used to state that he was 7 feet 2 inches (218.44 cm) because it was easier to remember. He suffered from acrophobia (fear of heights), and during the cable car stunt scenes in Moonraker, a stunt double was used because Kiel refused to be filmed on the top of a cable car over 2000 feet (607 m) above the ground.

In 1992, Kiel suffered a severe head injury in a car accident, which affected his balance. He was subsequently forced to walk with a cane to support himself (as shown in his appearance in Happy Gilmore, where he is seen leaning on a person or a cane). Afterwards, Kiel used a scooter or wheelchair.

Kiel was married to Diane for 40 years, and at the time of his death had four children, and nine grandchildren. He coauthored a biography of the abolitionist Cassius Marcellus Clay called Kentucky Lion. Kiel was also a born-again Christian. His website states that his religious conversion helped him to overcome alcoholism.

In the town of Waterton, signs of a circus are going up. Reports of a man-eating bear-like creature have prompted several hunters to buy some new bear traps. Meanwhile, at a country house, a group of boys are holding a meeting. Several are telling a story about a giant creature supposedly inhabiting the nearby Thunder Mountain, but the others don't believe them. Later that evening two of the boys, Tommy (Chance Michael Corbitt) and Ben (Ryan Todd) set out to find the mountain, but they get caught in a thunderstorm and barely escape getting hit by lightning (this is what gives Thunder Mountain its name). They take refuge inside a supposedly abandoned house. Whilst there, they find mysterious statues and paintings, one of which is in the shape of a bear and the other in the shape of a giant. Suddenly, the owner of the cottage returns. They boys try to hide from him but he flips open the table they are hiding under and they escape back into the woods. When they reach home, they tell their family their amazing story, but no one believes them. The next morning, they set out with another boy, Zeke MacGruder Daniel Pipoly) to go back to the cottage and find the answer to what the giant is. Thugs working for big-time miner Coy LaHood ride in and destroy the camp of a group of struggling miners and their families who have settled in nearby Carbon Canyon and are panning for gold there. In leaving, they also shoot the little dog of fourteen-year-old Megan Wheeler. As Megan buries it in the woods and prays for a miracle, we see a stranger heading to the town on horseback.

NYC dress manufacturer Jack (Warden) is in debt to loan shark "Mr Eddie" (Kiel), who tells him that Jack's son Bobby (O'Neal) must join the firm as "new blood", despite Bobby's complete lack of knowledge of the dress business, and current career as a Professor of American Literature at a small liberal arts college. Kidnapped by two of Eddie's goons, Bobby is forced to come back to the city and join his father's business. Bobby complicates matters by falling in love with Mr Eddie's neglected wife, the cultured Lira (Melato). After a late-night tryst at the home of Eddie and Lira, Bobby accidentally invents the solution to his father's problem: see-through denim blue jeans with strategically placed holes in the rear that expose one's backside. The fickle public goes crazy over the "sexy" new style. "Fine Fashions" repays its debt to Eddie, and Bobby goes back to his college. However, Lira follows him, and Eddie finds out about them and heads to the school in a murderous rage. Jack follows anxiously, and the last quarter of the film involves Lira stepping in for an ill singer to perform the role of Desdemona in the school's version of the opera Otello. Eddie knocks out the male lead and himself takes the role of Othello. Jack and Bobby then do their best to stay alive while trying to protect Lira from her jealous husband.
