Robert Clary (born Robert Max Widerman; March 1, 1926) is a French-American actor, published author, and lecturer. He is best known for his role in the television sitcom Hogan's Heroes as Corporal LeBeau ("Frenchie"). Clary is the last living principal cast member of the show from its inception (Kenneth Washington, who joined during the last season, also is still living).

Biography

Robert Widerman né à Paris le 1er mars 1926, de Moishe Widerman, tailleur, et de Baila, tous deux d’origine polonaise. Robert Clary était le plus jeune des 14 enfants de sa famille venue s’installer définitivement à Paris en 1923. La famille s’installe dans le bâtiment construit en 1926 par la Fondation Fernand Halphen au 12 rue des Deux-Ponts sur l’île Saint Louis. À 12 ans, il commence une carrière de chanteur professionnel. Le 25 septembre 1942, il est déporté de Drancy par le convoi 37 à destination d’Auschwitz-Birkenau. Il fait partie des 209 hommes de 16 à 45 ans sélectionnés en gare de Cosel pour le travail forcé. Il reste pendant trois semaines au camp d’Ottmuth avant d’être transféré au camp de Blechammer où il reçoit, en 1944, le matricule A-5714 qui lui est tatoué sur l’avant-bras gauche. L’avancée des alliés et l’évacuation, en janvier 1945, des camps dépendants du complexe d’Auschwitz-Birkenau, le mènent, au cours des Marches de la mort (Shoah) au camp de Gross-Rosen puis au camp de Buchenwald, matricule 125 603, où il est libéré le 11 avril 1945. Il est le seul survivant de sa famille.

Il fit carrière en France et aux États-Unis.

En 1965, Clary obtint le rôle qui lui procura une célébrité internationale, celui du Caporal Louis LeBeau (un prisonnier français) dans la série télévisée Papa Schultz (Hogan's Heroes) dont il est en 2019, avec Kenneth Washington, Anne Rogers et Nita Talbot l'un des seuls acteurs de la série encore en vie.

The film was essentially a reproduction of the stage revue with a thin plot added. This involved a producer and performer (Ronny Graham) in financial trouble on opening night. A wealthy Texan, whose daughter is in the show, offers to help out on the condition that he finds the show to be of high-enough quality and commercial potential to warrant the investment. Meanwhile, Graham locks a bill collector in a dressing room until the show is finished and he can collect the money.

After capturing an important Rif prisoner in an undercover operation, Sergeant Mike Kincaid (Lancaster) is imprisoned himself for striking a lieutenant (Stephen Bekassy) who beats a French woman (Mari Blanchard) with his riding crop for preferring Kincaid to him.
