Robin Hardy (born 2 October 1929) is an English author and film director. His most famous directorial work was The Wicker Man, and his latest project is a film adaptation of his novel Cowboys for Christ, which has been retitled as The Wicker Tree. Hardy now lives in London and Somerset.

Biography

Né dans le comté de Surrey en Angleterre en 1929, il étudie l'art à Paris dans les années 50. Il commence à travailler comme réalisateur pour l'Office national du film du Canada et réalise des programmes pour la télévision aux États-Unis. Il retourne ensuite en Angleterre où il réalise des publicités. Avec le romancier Anthony Shaffer, il fonde la société de production Hardy, Shaffer & Associates. En 1973, il réalise son premier long métrage Le Dieu d'osier (The Wicker Man). Ce film scénarisé par Shaffer, est considéré par le British Film Institute comme un des meilleurs films de l'histoire du cinéma britannique.

Sergeant Howie journeys to the remote Hebridean island, Summerisle, to investigate the disappearance of a young girl, Rowan Morrison. Howie, a devout Christian, is disturbed to find the islanders paying homage to the pagan Celtic gods of their ancestors. They copulate openly in the fields, include children as part of the May Day celebrations, teach children of the phallic association of the maypole, and place toads in their mouths to cure sore throats. The Islanders, including Rowan's mother, attempt to thwart his investigation by claiming that Rowan never existed.
