Rouben Zachary Mamoulian (pronunciation roo-BEN mah-mool-YAHN) (October 8, 1897 – December 4, 1987) was an Armenian-American film and theatre director.
Après avoir suivi ses études secondaires au Lycée Montaigne de Paris, Rouben Mamoulian rentre en Russie pour suivre des études de droit à l'université de Moscou , il abandonne ses études de droit pour suivre des cours d'art dramatique auprès Evgueni Vakhtangov, élève de Constantin Stanislavski.
En 1920, il suit sa soeur à Londres où il créera une compagnie théâtrale.
En 1923, il émigre aux Etats Unis.
Sa mise en scène la plus notable est la création de l’opéra Porgy and Bess, (de Georges Gershwin, Dorothy et DuBose Heyward) à l'Alvin Theater de Broadway à New York en 1935.
Il tourne son premier film Applause en 1929 qui fait partie des premiers films parlant.
Il décède à l'âge de 90 ans, le 8 octobre 1987 au Motion Picture and Television Hospital de Woodland Hills à Los Angeles . Il est enterré au Forest Lawn Memorial Park de Glendale dans le Comté de Los Angeles.
Une étoile lui est dédiée le 8 février 1960 sur le Walk of fame.
Depuis décembre 2002, les archives Robert Mamoulian sont déposées à la Bibliothèque du Congrès .

Rouben Mamoulian naît dans une famille arménienne de l'Empire Tsariste, son père, Zachary Mamoulian, était un banquier et sa mère, Virginia Kalantarian, dirigeait la société théâtrale de Tbilissi.Après avoir suivi ses études secondaires au Lycée Montaigne de Paris, Rouben Mamoulian rentre en Russie pour suivre des études de droit à l'université de Moscou , il abandonne ses études de droit pour suivre des cours d'art dramatique auprès Evgueni Vakhtangov, élève de Constantin Stanislavski.

Susan Miller (Gene Tierney) works as a girdle salesgirl in a big department store. She dreams of living on the other side. Don Diego Vega (Tyrone Power) is urgently called home by his father. To all outward appearances, he is the foppish son of wealthy ranchero and former Alcade Don Alejandro Vega (Montagu Love), having returned to California after his military education in Spain. Russian Prince Dmitri Nekhlyudov (Fredric March) seduces innocent young Katusha Maslova (Anna Sten), a servant to his aunts. Lily une jeune paysanne vient de perdre son père, elle est recueillie par sa tante, Madame Rasmussen, libraire à Berlin, une femme autoritaire, rigide et légèrement portée sur l'alcool. De la fenêtre de sa chambre Lily aperçoit un atelier de sculpteur qui la fascine. Un jour, Richard le sculpteur entre dans la librairie et semble captivé par le corps de Lily, il la persuade de venir poser pour elle. Acceptant après avoir hésité, Lily déjouant la surveillance de sa tante se rend chez Richard qui la convainc de se déshabiller pour prendre la pose. Bientôt une très belle sculpture prend forme et les deux jeunes gens entament une idylle. Survient alors le baron von Merzbach qui est un client de Richard et qui tombe en admiration devant la statue, il demande à être présenté à Lily. Quelque temps plus tard, le baron persuade Richard qu'avec ce dernier, Lily n'aura aucun avenir, alors qu'avec lui, elle aura la reconnaissance, la fortune, le titre…par lâcheté Richard accepte. Le soir alors que Lily s'apprête à se rendre chez Richard, Madame Rasmussen la surprend et la chasse de son domicile. Elle se rend chez Richard, mais celui-ci a disparu, et c'est alors le baron von Merzbach qui l'accueille à sa place en lui apprenant que Richard est parti en voyage. Le baron-ci lui propose le mariage, désorientée et choquée, Lily accepte. Elle fait son éducation dans le grand monde, apprend la musique, le français, la danse mais n'est pas heureuse. Von Prell le palefrenier du baron s'éprend d'elle et lui déclare sa flemme pendant une leçon d'équitation, Lily le rabroue.
