Roy E. Glenn, Sr. (June 3, 1914 – March 12, 1971) was an African-American character actor who was born in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Biography

Au cinéma, Roy Glenn collabore à quarante-neuf films américains, les trois premiers sortis en 1936-1937, les suivants à partir de 1950. Le classique de la science-fiction Les Évadés de la planète des singes et le western Tueur malgré lui, ses deux derniers films, sortent fin mai 1971, plus de deux mois après sa mort brutale, d'une crise cardiaque.

En particulier, il contribue à deux films réalisés par Otto Preminger, dont la distribution est exclusivement afro-américaine, Carmen Jones (1954), avec Dorothy Dandridge et Harry Belafonte, puis Porgy and Bess (1959), avec Dorothy Dandridge et Sidney Poitier. Il tourne aux côtés de ce dernier dans trois autres films, L'Homme qui tua la peur (1957, avec John Cassavetes), Un raisin au soleil (1961, avec Claudia McNeil), et enfin Devine qui vient dîner ? (1967, avec Spencer Tracy et Katharine Hepburn), où il tient le rôle — sans doute son plus connu — de M. Prentice, père du docteur John Prentice (Sidney Poitier).

À la télévision, Roy Glenn apparaît dans quarante-deux séries, entre 1953 et 1970, ainsi que dans un téléfilm, diffusé en 1969.

Au théâtre, il joue à Broadway (New York) dans la comédie musicale Golden Boy , représentée 568 fois d'octobre 1964 à mars 1966, mise en scène par Arthur Penn, avec Sammy Davis Jr. et Kenneth Tobey (entre autres).

Set between 1910 and 1915, the story follows Jack Jefferson (James Earl Jones; patterned after real-life boxer Jack Johnson) going on a hot streak of victories in the boxing ring as he defeats every white boxer around. Soon the press and racists announce the search for a "great white hope", a boxer who will defeat Jefferson for the heavyweight title. Meanwhile, Jefferson prepares for a few more matches, but he lets his guard down by courting the beautiful (and very white) Eleanor Bachman (Jane Alexander), and when everyone, including Jack's black "wife", discover this, the tensions grow to fever pitch. Jack's close black friends become scared over his pushing the envelope of success and the white authorities conspire to frame him with unlawful sexual relations with Eleanor and thereby take away his title. It leads to jealousy, a run from the law, and finally, disaster.

The story is set in Oklahoma Territory in 1889. It opens with Jed Cooper driving a small herd of cattle across a stream. When the men in a posse ( Capt. Q. Jones)) surround him and accuse him of rustling the herd, he shows them a receipt for the cattle, but the man he bought them from was a rustler who killed the herd's owners. Cooper explains that he knew nothing about the murder, but only Jenkins expresses doubts about his guilt. After Reno takes Cooper's saddle and Miller takes his wallet, the men hang him from a tree and ride away, leaving him for dead.
