Bhagwan Shri Sai Baba lived in British India. He was initially shunned by both Hindus and Muslims, especially by Hindu Bal Bhate. Sai was a Muslim and Bal Bhate forbade him to enter any Temple. Rohila, a Muslim, who thought Sai was desecrating the local Masjid by performing Hindu prayers and incantations and attempted to kill Sai. Then he saw both the Allah and Bhagwan in Sai and became a devotee. When Sai was ready to give up his body and resurrect himself after 3 days, just like Lord Jesus, a disbelieving Bal had wanted Sai's body to be cremated within 24 hours - only to find out that Sai had indeed risen, and also became his devotee. Bhagoti, a leper, who was cured by Sai became his follower. Though Sai had no relations, he did call Tatya's mother his sister; Tatya his maternal nephew; a devotee named Laxmi as his daughter, and an elderly woman as his mother. Sai displayed his true form and opulence to another devotee, Nana Chandorkar. Sai lived in a rebuilt Masjid and urged his devotees to pray God, as the Creator and to love and respect all living beings. He begged for alms daily so that he could collect sins and wash them away. He always uttered 'Allah Bhala Kare' and 'Bhagwan Bhala Kare' to both Muslims and Hindus alike. He appeared in a multitude forms to his deities (Lord Jesus, Guru Nanak Devji, Allah, Bhagwan Shri Ganesh) to cater to the various tastes of devotees. Sai was also fond of Nanavli, a mentally challenged devotee, who often challenged Sai. He was one of the few who really understood and accepted Sai as Vishnu's Avatar. Sai appeared simultaneously in a wealthy man's and Nana's dreams and called upon them to construct a Mandir of Bhagwan Shri Krishna. While the construction was under way, Sai prophesied the death of Tatya. Shortly thereafter while bequeathing the nine coins symbolizing nine virtues to Laxmi (which depict Sravan, Kirtan, Smaran, Padaseva, Archana, Namaskar, Dastan, Samveta, & Atmanivrdan) Sai was ready to demonstrate to his devotees why they should not worry about Tatya's impending demise.

Ramu (N. T. Rama Rao) is a truck driver who gives a lift to a famous singer Rupa Devi (Sridevi) when her vehicle breaks down. They become friends. He is already in love with Tulasi (Jayasudha), whom he marries. Rupa wishes him well calling him "Nestham" (friend), even though she has fallen in love with him. Ramu has an accident, and everyone believes that he is dead. His grieving mother tells a pregnant Tulasi to go away. Upset with everything in her life, she jumps from a bridge into the water. She is saved by a young guy Prakash (Nandamuri Balakrishna) and his colony members find that she lost her sight. Thulasi gives birth to a baby girl and names her as Ramatulasi, combining her and her husband's names. Prakash gives shelter to them and threats Thulasi as his on sister. Ramu turns out to be alive and he comes to know Thulasi had committed suicide. He becomes depressed. Rupa re-enters his life and helps him overcome his depression. They get engaged. They become acquainted with Ramatulasi, now a little girl, selling little God's statutes on the street. They are completely enchanted by her, even though they don't know that she is really Ramu's daughter. Rupa meets Thulasi and tells her they'll pay for her eye operation, so she can regain her sight. Rupa also invites Thulasi to her wedding with Ramu. After she regains her sight from the operation, she goes to Rupa's wedding and is shocked to see Ramu. She quickly leaves, not wanting to disrupt Rupa and Ramu's lives. Prakash tells Ramu that Thulasi is still alive and that Ramatulasi is actually his daughter. Rupa cancels the wedding and tells him to go and reunite with his wife and daughter, which he does. Rupa goes back on stage permanently.

The film tells the story of a feud between two families, Thonnooram Veedu and Kaippulli Paalattu Tharavadu. Chandrappan (Kottayam Chellappan) is the head of Thonnooram Veedu. He has an eye on the treasure kept in an underground cell of the Paalaattu mansion. A dispute between the children of the two families results in a bloody fight. Gundamma (Suryakantam) is a rich widow who has a daughter Saroja (Jamuna Ramanarao), and son Prabhakar (Haranath) and a step daughter Lakshmi (Savitri). Both the girls are beautiful and intelligent. Saroja is a teen spoiled by her mother's pampering whereas Lakshmi is treated as a servant in her own house. Ramabhadraiah (S. V. Ranga Rao), who has two sons of marriageable age, is searching for suitable brides. Gundamma is interested in pursuing an alliance with Ramabhadraiah’s family for her daughter Saroja and sends a word through a middle man. It happens that he used to be a good friend of Gundamma's late husband. She wants to overcome the obstacle of her elder step daughter by getting her married to a down-and-out guy so she doesn’t have to get jeered for neglecting her step daughter. Kanchu Gantaiah (Ramana Reddy), Gundamma's manager and a cousin somehow wants Saroja to marry his son Bhupati (Rajanala) who happens to be a delinquent and is in a prison.

Swaroop Singh (O. A. K. Thevar) won the respect and loyalty of the people of Senji during his rule where Hindus and Muslims lived in peace and prosperity. A son was born to Swaroop Singh and his wife Rambai (Rushyendramani), whom they named Tej Singh pronounced as Desingu (MGR) in Tamil. Swaroop Singh has a secret wife called Jaan Bibi (Lakshmiprabha), and they have a son called Dawood Khan (MGR) who was a little older than Desingu. Fearing that Dawood might pose a threat to the succession of the throne in years to come, on the advice of his commander and close confidant Yusuf Khan (T. K. Ramachandran), Swaroop Singh persuades Jaan Bibi to leave Senji, taking little Dawood with her. Desingu who has integrity and courage grows up with his childhood friend, another brave young man called Mohammed Khan (S. S. Rajendran), and two are always inseparable.
